bob's website has been up on the net and crawled for a few months. the site has not shown a pagerank for a while because we replaced some hard disks during a crawl, leaving our site out of the index for a month (or at least we hope that was the problem). how does one explain that the logs show we have been crawled for a span of two months but have no backlinks in SERPS, which is not true? There are a number of incoming links from sites that have been crawled recently also. bob's website is in SERPS. it displays higher rankings on altavista, lycos, msn. yahoo and msn have so many ads at the top of each SERP that you have to scroll to the bottom of the page to get the NON-PAID listings. what would TV be like if 75% of the content consisted of advertisements, with only 25% devoted to entertainment? i think that there is room for a search engine project where the pageranking (or equivalent non-patent infringing algorithms) are published with an open source license. things change quickly. google could be gone in three years if a heavily funded think-tank were assembled and funded.

just looking for some ideas or suggestions.
is this typical behavior, is this weird behavior?

Hi konduct,

Welcome to Webmaster World [webmasterworld.com]
is this typical behavior, is this weird behavior?

Without a doubt this is atypical behaviour, at least as compared to what was the norm.

Google appears to be in a state of flux right now since the start of the last "update" and until things get sorted out the best advice might to to just sit back and wait.

The understanding Dominic thread [webmasterworld.com] is a good spot to get familiar with all that's been going on. And, if you read a few more of the recent posts in the Google News forum you'll find many posts along the same lines as yours.

By the way, Dominic is WW's name for the, ahem, last update, sort of in the same vein as naming hurricances.

Jim
