Google Penalty - Permanent or Temporary

Freshbot and Googlebot seen crawling recently

Greetings,

On the 14th of May our site disappeared from the Google database. It also has a gray bar(not a PR0). My fear is that this site has been permanently banned but presently haven't got the knowledge to determine if that's the case. I wrote to google and just got the standard reply. Also, my webmaster says that there's almost no chance that the site was down during the crawl that determined this latest SERPs/PR.

One thing that gives me hope is that I noticed two nights ago that the freshbot was sitting on the site. Then, last night, I noticed that googlebot was there:

i.e. - crawler11.googlebot.com IP 64.68.82.33

My (wishful?)thinking is that if the site were permanently banned, then google wouldn't bother spending their resources crawling the site(there must have been six freshbots on the site).

Can anyone tell me if this crawling activity is indicative of a site that hasn't been permanently banned?

I remember Matt Cutts at the Pubcon saying that hidden text/link penalties do not mean that your site will not be crawled anymore.

I would also love hearing a "definitive and clear" answer to this

I starting to think that nobody really knows

Hi Vita,

I don't think this had to do with hidden links. More like a bad redirection. Then again, I'm not a webmaster. I wrote about our specific suspected problem earlier(titled: Penalty Woes). Unfortunately, can't give the exact url because webmasterworld's site doesn't seem to be working in the search mode.

I just want to know if this site is hosed. If it is, I can move on to another, although after a year of work and great results, I hate to do this.

Hello GuinnessGuy,

Did you do as GoogleGuy suggested and e-mail webmaster at google.com with a reinclusion request?

Did you get any feedback, if so?

As he said - if it is a penalty then it will last 30 days, so you might have another couple of weeks of nail biting?

Try not to worry, I'm sure it's not permanent!

Penalty Woes post [webmasterworld.com]

If you are on the black list your site will still get spider.

you would have had to do some really naughty stuff to grab yourself a permanent ban usually google like to toy with you by giving you a PR0 and leaving it like that for ever and a day.

with out see the site in question and knowing the history it's hard to tell but best guess is you have been dropped temporarily just sit it out a month.

Hi Polly,

Thanks for the encouragement. Maybe things will work out. I just was wondering if google would even bother crawling a site that was permanently banned. I'd like to do some planning and without this knowledge it's danged hard to do.
