My backlink to DMOZ no longer shows, so I had a look at the category to find that it is grey barred?

How could this be?

Although it looks better now, it is sometimes (almost) impossible to browse ODP. So Google and the other SEs will have had problems with spidering the ODP. Those problems can result in some ODP pages having a grey bar.

Google uses the RDF dump from the ODP to make the Google Directory. So it is possible that a page that has a grey bar, can be found correctly in the Google Directory.

OK, thanks

so should I try and go through the hassle and heartache of trying to changing my category upwards? The step up has competitors in and has PR 7.

I would think you could save yourself the trouble. Your chance of getting the site moved to a higher category are (almost) zero

Most likely, the current page will get a back the old PR, plus or minus 1, the next time the PR is updated (i.e. next Google update). The current grey bar shouldn't influence the decision to ask ODP to put your site in a higher category. They higher category could just as well have a grey bar. The only reason to ask for a higher category should be that your site belongs better in that category. Did you add a lot of pages since the site was added to the current category? Maybe the site now covers more topics.

If the category was created this year it will likely have a grey or white bar. Toolbar PR doesn't mean anything right now anyway.

thanks for this - actually we are broader in focus than many in the category above. and our new site this week will have over 100 pages rather than 6 at present!

but I was just trying to work out why we have disappeared from the search results for one set of keywords, yet appear highly (top 2) in others.

I've been trying to submit a couple of urls to ODP for weeks now. All I get is INTERNAL SERVER ERROR.

I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that ODP is a waste of space. Unless it gets taken over, it will most likely be dead and buried the not too distant future.

I really think ODP will be around a long time. I'm sure they need editors. Any volunteers?
Right now the bigger problem is the indexing of dmoz pages and the directory transfer update to google.
Google holds the key to the PR importance of ODP, but the value of a fully extensive and comprehensive human edited directory of the web in invaluable.

Kaled, try submitting to ODP in the late evening Pacific Time in the U.S. Seems to help get past the internal server error problem.

This discussion would be better off in the Directories forum. If you read any of hundreds of recent threads there, you'll find out all about internal server errors and what is being done to rectify the problem.

If you only want to browse through the dmoz directory listings then try the two new mirror sites at [ch.dmoz.org ] and at [de.dmoz.org ] instead.
