How do they do it?

The example Google Search for "God" that's been noted here mystifies me. How is that happening? Incoming links anchor text "god" seems impossible, I can't find the word anywhere in there... did some of you figure it out? (Tried site search and didn't see it in the first couple of pages).

Maybe they are using cloaking. At a quick glance, they are seem to be capable of such methods.

But would that really be enough? That seems a little far reaching?

Many times, the anchor text links alone are enough.

This has been discussed quite a bit here. Do a search under anchor text.

Thanks MrGuy. I hadn't realized it would be enough. Where on earth do they get all those links with god in them from..? Just throw up domains to do it themselves?

Ah, yes PR8, 6,700 back links. That would do it. The link comes from anyone that uses their content management system, mostly.

Thanks Shak, I read part of that thread. I understand the concept, (maybe), but they need the word god in the anchor text don't they? It seems bizarre that they have sites using a content management system doing that...

Could the 2 links that have god in the url have something to do with it as well?

God is the first password after installation and the internal name of the super-admin.

I think you may also find that many church communities use that program for their website creation. I have seen many of them. And, unless they remove the standard link from the bottom of every generated page, all that praising and quoting and god knows what etc gets linked back to that site via the "Web site engine's code is Copyright © 2002 by xyz" link.

When I ran that search I found a PHP site with 50,600 backwards links and not a one has the word "God" in it. Not a one.

I don't think this thread will stand very long because it referrences certain searches - but I sure would love to see some opinions before it drifts off into the WebmasterWorld blackhole leaving another unsolved mystery...

So, you physically checked all 50,600 links?

I think this highlights a bit of a weakness in the algo. Anchor text apears to weigh far to high. I think there needs to be a cut off point. This is just an example of how the algo it'self can lead to poor results.

Maybe you have it NeverHome... though it seemed so unlikely to have "god" in enough link anchor texts to beat out all the US evangelists with all those $$.

I figured the thread faded fast because there were tricks that some knew about and didn't want to publicize... :-)

I still don't know how they manage it. I don't think the serp, for what is a popular search word in some parts of the world, is just by coincidence.

Actually Google did that for me via "Search Within These Results"

If there is not one link with the work god in it, why do they show up as number #1 for the allinanchor:god search?
