OK, hidden text, ignoring ALT I can grasp...

But what aspects of crosslinking between multiple
domains has google wised up on?

I thought google wasn't domain but PAGE specific?

hence, thousands of homepages on geocities are treated
as independant sites, but how does it decide that?

How does google decide this is the same site if your
using more than one domain?

I don't think Google cares at this point.

People get in trouble when they heavily cross link and dominate the serps which catches the attention of your competitors to report you to Google.

I'm thinking about setting up a few informational/slightly promotional domains on our server.

My question, can google tell/or does google know that all these different, related domains (with different, fresh content), are all on the same domain and somehow discount the rankings of it?

For example, let's say my niche is roofing. My current site is: first&lastname.com. But, since I'm based in, let's say, California, I'm thinking about setting up a domain titled: CaliforniaRoofers. The page would be a directory of sorts that links to the 10 or 15 best "roofers" in the state of California - with biographical data and samples images of past work from each roofer. Granted, I'll be in the list, and would primarily be doing it to promote my own site, but, I'm wondering if it would be of any value?

Since I accept very limited "roofing" jobs, most of the traffic would be going to the other sites.

Shaadi,

Looks like you answered my message while I was still formulating it...

It appears that google doesn't notice similar IP addresses across unique, yet themed web sites.

Thanks,

Chris

My experience is that Google ignores IP address but penalizes heavily for cross-linking. I ran into this problem and was almost penalized out of existance. However, I removed all the cross-linking and my sites are once again being spidered and listed. So there is hope, but it took over 3 months for the sites to recover.

Of course Google is aware of IP numbers, without a shadow of a doubt.

Geocities sites *are* separate sites even though they're on the same physical domain. It's evident by internal linking on the sites, and also by inbound links.
