When the search term matches, I keep getting directory listings on top of the SERPS.

This is new isn't it?

Are you sure you're not just seeing the directory category for the top sponsored link?

Nope, its not the category of the sponsored link, and the #1 SERP has its own directory lising below it.
This is a more generic directory link that matches the search term. Also getting News results below the directory listings.

eg search term "hotel"
Hotel - Book Great Hotels at LOW Prices
www.widgets.com Find Hotels Around the World - Learn More Sponsored Link

Categories: Recreation > Travel > Lodging > Hotels > Hotel Chains Regional > North America > ... > Lodging > Hotels > Hotel Chains

News:
Liza Minnelli breaks kneecap in Italian hotel - 1 hour ago

SERPS---

I am seeing the related directory category and the News headlines on selected searches as well.

That includes your example term David_M.

OK, think I'm seeing the same. However, the directory links are duds - pointing to cats. that don't exist (yet?)

No, been there as long as I can remember. Dud cats are new though!

Dud cats are new though!

ODP has been restructuring regional for a while now. My guess that dud cats are a result of the current directory.google.com and the crawled version not coiniciding.

I wonder if the dud cats are true in SJ, FI etc?

My site was removed from the google category? What could be the reason and how can I
re-submit?

fashezee,

I'd check to see if your site is in the expected category in ODP. If so, just wait until the next google update and I'd expect that you'd then see your site back in the google directory.

I believe, from what other folks have said, that google is currently using fairly old ODP data.

The dud cats are pretty funny. "Media" calls ups News/Media/Alternative, not News/Media and not one of the many other News/Media/ subcategories.

There are always a few directories that do not align with the known data. There are literally thousands of category renames, moves, creations and deletions at the ODP every single month.

Changes of the ODP structure come to Google with a new dump only, so all categories shown in results were valid weeks or months ago ;).
