Will I be penalized for getting lot of links from high PR(678) referrer logs or is it worth the effort?

One of the most annoying ways of spamming. Not only you will you be trying to fake other peoples server stats data with non existing referrals but also hammering their servers by fake hits. I can show you dozens of domains having been banned because of this. I only wonder why Google just doesnt stop counting links from these stats pages automatically.

I mean there is no way one could get banned automatically, but you could get a manual penalty for doing this?

C'mon dude. You are publicly asking if a cheating practice will get you banned. First competitor who will look into your backlinks will report you and you'll get banned manually. Moreover considering the fact maximum PR of these pages is about 4-5 and each of them has at least 100 links out it's really not worth the effort. XM
