pr0 may just be newish pages

I've noticed this before and wonder if there is anything to my theory. A new page gets an estimated pr until the next update but since it wasn't deepcrawled yet it drops down to pr0 until the next update. This might explain some pr0s people are seeing. I have 4 or 5 like this right now most are articles but one is a newish links page.

I've seen that happen occasionally on new pages. One of my newer pages is showing PR0 right now, but it ranks near the top of Google's search results for two keyphrases (one with 1.6 million competitors and one with more than 2 million).

On the right side of the blue bar on the Google search results page, you'll see white type that says something like:

"Results 1 - 10 of about 3,680,000. Search took 0.17 seconds"

I'm getting the feeling that the toolbar isn't guesstimating anymore. That you're looking at a fresher PR.

Hmmm, I have to add another possiblity to my PR0 theory. It seems links pages with no additional description, just links in anchor text, are PR0. In fact my site map is now PR0 as it just lists in brief form, within the anchor, what pages are on the site.

I tend to agree with martinibuster, I’m seeing many new pages without the guessed PR. This is got to be a good thing.

Not sure about links pages annej. I’m seein many site map and link farm pages with PR. Interesting observation. Guess we have to ‘wait and see’ (catch phrase for this update)

You may be right but I don't think it's the final PR either. Some are articles that have had pretty big traffic. Hopefully those will get some PR back. I know they have a few backlinks that just aren't showing.

I'd hate to see articles that address hard to find information, in my case on history, will be lost in Google because of PR.

On the straight links pages like my site map I guess it remains to be seen if they will lose the PR permantly. I have older directory pages that haven't lost PR but they have text descriptions with each link. I really don't want to add text because I'm trying to set up a site map that shows the site in a way that visitors can quickly scan and find any page. I'm starting to think it's more a matter of newness, less than 2 or 3 months old, that is causing the PR0

Chief: I am having the same problem as you. My site which was a PR 4 has now a PRzero. To my knowledge, I have nothing wrong with this site. Sometimes the toolbar still gives the PR4 but mostly it shows PRzero. This is very frustrating because I do not understand why it shows PRzero most of the time lately. The index sometimes shows my site in its correct position on page one and sometimes shows it at top of page 2. I think Google has a massive problem on its hands caused by the last index. Does anyone see any signs of problems straightening out yet?

Glad you said that annej as I have this problem on two sites that have been expanded during the past 2-3 months. All internal pages are PR0 on both sites.

I guess this make sense if the index is showing results from 3 months ago - those pages didn't exist then.

Yes - i am having exact same issue. I revised my site and added sevearl new pages.

Now the homepage has PR, but all internal pages on the site are PR0. I was concerned, but am glad to see I am not the only one.

I use no sort of tricks and have no one linked to me that does, so i know its not something i did.

I've done some checking too. In general - now seeing Toolbar PR0 (Grey bar) - which traditionally indicates not yet indexed - on new pages, of several existing PR5/6 sites - where these pages have been added since April.

All existing pages (pre April) still have same PR

Tradionally - Google guestimated Pagerank (was generally accepted as equal to PR of the top level page eg. index.html minus one PR unit per level of directory) was applied to new, not yet indexed pages - until they were fully indexed.

Grey toolbar PR0 was traditionally most common for the 'new sites' - rather than new pages in an existing, indexed site.

So I agree - the fundamental shift is that new pages, from an existing Pageranked site, no longer 'inherit' or get 'guestimated' pagerank.

eg Look at the toolbar rank for this page now - grey bar. Look at the homepage.

I can see how this would work for some of our clients' sites but not for another that's just developed the same problem. We have two sites that went up in Jan/Feb, they were showing PR4 with several PR4-6 backlinks until a couple of days ago when both suddenly went to PR0. At the moment both are holding their position in the SERPS. Neither sites has had any changes except for the addition of more backlinks. Google is showing no backlinks at all for either of them. The other site has been around for just under a year and was PR5 until a couple of days ago when the home page went down to PR0, but the internal pages stayed at PR5. Google 'lost' all this sites backlinks in March and hasn't seen them since.

It seems that for these sites of ours Google has suddenly lost its ability to see the backlinks - including Dmoz and Google directory links and internal links. I don't think this is a penalty of any kind, I think Google has just lost the links somewhere. I'm hoping Google will manage a successful deep crawl and index soon and give us our links back!

That's one reason I don't think most PROs mean much right now. Hopefully as this update chugs along it will all sort out.

The links pages I'm wondering about though. Does anyone have pages with almost all anchor text that are older than 3 months that have gone PRO? That would tell if this is something separate from the other PROs.

I've seen only two such instances on my site:

1) The PR0 that I'm currently seeing on a fairly new page.

2) Two articles that were published earlier this year. These were spidered by the freshbot and showed a toolbar PageRank of 0 until the next update, when they bounced up to the expected PR4.

I really think people shouldn't worry about PR0 right now if it's just on a few pages and they haven't been doing anything shady.
