how long are the penalities that google hands out to sites using spam techniques,

if in that time they have fixed all spam like use, should you notify google or just let the next bot index do its thing?

need to know for a client of mine who switched to us cause of the previous SEO techniques

I think for a hidden text penalty, you are out of google for a month.
