Some one should start an email notification service that will send you an email when the update starts and when it is finished....

What do you think? Is there one?

this time round had their been an email notification, people would have gone mad by now :)

especially if you are sad enough to have the email sent over as a SMS to your mobile phone.

Webmasterworld frontpage is normally rapid to inform the world and GoogleGuy that it has started.

Please add a choice to only be notified when it's over. I no longer care when it's begun, as caring about the beginning seems to have become a full-time job.

>>>>when it starts and when it is over

That would be the way to go. Otherwise I don't think anyone would use this service. If you want my opinion... specifically I would like to know:

1) when www2/3 have been updated to reflect new serps/algo
2) the precise moment when an update has moved from www2/3 to www
3) when it has been stable for say 6 hours on www

... and I would like preferences of how to be alerted for each one, so I could disable (1) or even (2) if it started to bug me.

[added:] Aann beat me too it [/added]

I know a few sites that do it that got it wrong this time, I dont think many people could have predicted the exact start and finish of this update.

Yes the end cannot predicted exactly, because when it is, it is old news...like is this the end? ;-

Unfortunately this type of tool would not work with today's Google. You'd be getting email notification every 4-8 hours depending on which way the wind was blowing. ;)

I think there are clear signs that the update has started and clear signs that it has ended.

If you take out all the people that do not wait to see if what they are seeing sticks you would have a clear start and a finish just based on posts here.

I think that this service would have to be performed manually.

JJdesign I tend to disagree, WWW2 and WWW3 starting changing backlinks back in May the 5th but according to Googleguy the update had not started yet, so I dont know if this is going to be the same in the future, things only started moving a couple of days ago when the FI and SJ servers started slowly moving to CW and DC. And I dont think the update is quite finsished (is it a update?) yet there are still 4 servers that arent up to scratch on some queries.

Actually I have the best way to tell when Google has updated......

When my link exchange requests increase by a factor of 5 or more, it's safe to say Google has updated and panic has set in :)
