Multiple BLs from the same site

does Google care?

I have a client that has many multiple links from the same URL to their home page. Does Google look at those as 100 backlinks, and therefore give the site the credit of having 100 backlinks, or do the links cancel each other out?

So, as we build out our backlink strategy, should we look to getting multple links from the same URL?

For any page, there is a limit to the amount of PageRank passed through. If you have more links on that page, you will get a higher percentage of the available PageRank from that page to your site.

So, yes - multiple links on the same page can be good for that. However, PageRank maximization is not the only factor in rising in the results on Google's search engine results pages (SERPs).

I agree with Jeremy, but in the case of multiple links on URLa, all pointing to URLb, they count as one. Multiple links from different URLs on one domain all count independantly of course.

using data from a few months ago, but it seems doubtful they changed that

Thanks guys. One question about multiple links on URLa linking to URLb. What if the link on URLa are on different pages:

www.URLa.com/home
www.URLa.com/away
www.URLa.com/confused

Since G is only indexing pages, would that look like 3 incoming links?

Each page has it's own URL, so you can't have the examples that you list. Perhaps you are confusing URL's with Domains.

Go back and read ciml's post #3 He stated that many links from one page (One URL) count as one link. Links from different pages on one Domain (One Site) each count as a separate link. I hope this helps a little.

Yes, Google will index multiple links from a domain to a page, but as far as I know only one from a page to a page. My question in the case of multiple page to page links is this. If different links from a page to another page have different anchor text, what does Google do?

I think Google only displays one link from a single page to page, but that doesn't mean multiple links on one page don't count. I think the PR transferred by each link is factored in the same way, plus the link text is cumulative.

This is consistent with Google's model, if there are 10 links on a page and 9 point to one place and 1 to the other, a random surfer is more likely to go through one of the 9, and the two cases are treated accordingly.
