PR question

Strange PR Case

Hi,

I have a website that has a link from a PR 8 page in dmoz. I had PR 7 but after the April update (40 days ago) I only have PR 4.
Can Anyone explain why. No fishy stuff (spam) at all.

Is the DMOZ cat that you have a link from still definitely have its PR8? I noticed that the PR of several of the categories I regularly look at was reduced recently.

does Google show that backlink if you use the 'link' command?

Is it a regular page or a special one like an editor profile, faq or charter page?

Does the dmoz page have more than 100 links? Beyond some threshold, the normal PR transfer rules don't seem to apply. Dropping three whole notches of PR (assuming it's PR8.0 and you're PR4.99) is quite normal for a page with say, 250 links.

Using the Google directory can you find other low PR pages of at least PR4, where the backlink shows? If yes, then the dmoz page may have a rare penalty. Does the category relate to a possible "poison word", or does it link to a few sites that may be considered bad neighbourhoods.

Google missed a lot of DMOZ and Google directory pages in its March deepcrawl. If you depended on backlinks from those two for your pagerank it wouldn't be a surpise at all to see that drop.

Don't just check the link to you page, check the backlinks to the dmoz page.
