And not have the actual keyword on the website?

I have a site in my category with a 2 keyword phrase, ranking #1, the only mention of it is in his description, and in his dmoz description. Cant be found on the site. This is a 250,000 a month typed in 2-word keyword.

So is this common? Any enlightening would be greatly appreciated.

A site can rank for the words especially if the competition isn't high for those words. Sites linking to their site with the hyperlink anchor text being the phrase helps them out, and also dmoz description stuff helps. Does your dmoz description not use those keywords? :D

I have a good rank for a 3 word phrase and one of the words doesnt not appear on my site once..!

Its all down to anchor text in links. I think I have about 100 links coming in with this word in it. Thank you my linking friends :P

It's interesting that you mention that because our site ranks #1 for a couple of phrases that are found nowhere on our site (only in meta keywords). When I discovered this a couple weeks ago, I was baffled.

Try a Google search on "best viewed" (with or without the quotes). The IE home page is number one because of the zillions of sites with a link to it and anchor text of "best viewed with IE".

I can be as simple as he just has one word and has a higher PR. I have seen this many times. I don't know how you get get there if you have no words in title or page.

How do you find out how many searches are done per month on Google for a keyword? I must have missed that.

Thanks!

Sounds like a google bomb to me. Search "talentless hack" and you'll understand more.
