Minimum PR to accept - is there one?

Hello -

I'm new to webmasterworld and have yet another question regarding page rank.

Is there a "minimum" page rank that I should accept when trying to get inbound links to my site? For example is it "bad" to accept a link from a site that has a page rank of 3 or even 2 (these would be smaller specialized directories and the like). If sites that link to you have low page ranks (not zero or no rank though), does this hurt your sites page rank.

It seems to me from scouring these forums that there is a sort of richter scale with regards to the value of page rank where maybe 100 page rank 2 links equals the value of 1 page rank 3 link (those are just made up numbers) but I'm not sure if there are negative aspects to being linked to, except for of course link farms, bad neighborhoods, etc.

Any advice would be appreciated.

The thing to remember is that even a site with a low PR can bring in lots of traffic to yours if it is useful and beneficial to the user. PR is not the be all and end all of everything sometimes, a PR1 page on a popular site could bring you hundreds of hits a day.

A link is a link is a link. :D Take what you can get no matter how big or small, who knows overnight that site may become the next big thing, may get press or somekind or a link to another site. (:

Hi eztrip, welcome to WebmasterWorld. Avoid PR0 or gray bar, but any other link is welcome. The higher the PR the better, but even a link from a PR1 page can help your ranking a little bit (not only for PR but also for the link text) now and maybe even more in the future.

If you are talking about a straight one way inbound link, all are good.

It probably is not wise to exchange links with a banned site as it may be part of the elusive " bad neighborhoods" google speaks of.

Take the higher PR sites first and lower PR after that.

If you're talking about reciprocal links, remember that the link from you will help the other site to build PageRank as well... and since they're now your link partner, that's good for you. Your link may help them to get other links, which again builds their PR and yours in turn.

when it comes to inbound links, take all you can get. Obviously the higher PR links will be more beneficial but at the end of the day thay all add up.

It is just a question of finding the links. The main directories are a good place to start. Then go for any topical directories that are within your niche.

Try a seach for "[your indusry] add url" and you will un-cover some gems.

The only think you want to avoid is linking to a 'bad neighbourhood'. Those types of severe, transferable penalties are rare, so you shouldn't loose sleep over it.
