Adsense plummeted in the last few hours.

I'm curious if anyone else has seen this, and if not then why it happened.

Usually from 7pm until midnight I'll see an increase in revenue of about $50. Today was going like normal, but then from 7pm until 9pm it went up by about $2. Then from 9pm until 11pm, another $1. So where I expected around $40 to $50, I only made $3!

Traffic was normal, ads are showing up like normal, and nothing changed on my end. There are no "warnings" in the Adsense dashboard.

Is there a delay with the Adsense report, or something I should be in panic mode about?

Are you using ad-balancer? What is it set at?

I have also been experiencing issues that started on December 18th. I have noticed empty ads on some of my pages but not on all. I cant pin point why some pages would have ads and others were blank. I thought it may have something with this User First Beta Program that i was enrolled into but Im not sure. My earnings have been down and this has been going on for over a day for me now. Also, my web traffic has been the same.

Yep, set at 99/76. So the 75% coverage is right on point, although the 72% from the 18th is a tad low.

I thought it may have something with this User First Beta Program that i was enrolled into but Im not sure.

Wow, you're actually enrolled?! I thought that was an urban legend! LOL I'm still not enrolled, and no real explanation of what the problem is. But no one has reported any benefits from it so I haven't cared too much.

You're not alone in the revenue drop, though, so the issue probably isn't on your end. I suspect that businesses have cut back on advertising after the Trump tax plan was approved, honestly.

@rustybrick and @NickMNS I am also experiencing low coverage and extremely low RPM these last couples days (18th and 19th). Losing a lot of money. This is starting to worry me. Some pages on my sites have ads while others show blank. Never had this problems before. Coverage was always ~ 100%. I'm in the US

What to do?!

I also have a sharp drop in profits, and low coverage. I also have a decrease in CPC.
In a large part of the pages, especially when I create new pages, I do not have any ads..
What is going on?

@ariel1238a I also am dealing with the same thing. Started noticing on Dec. 18th. My coverage has dropped more than 10% over the last 3 days. I have many blank/empty ads all over.

This is probably a bug if the problem appears to many people. The question is whether this is a problem for everyone, or is it only a problem to us and there is a reason for it

I am also facing same issue of blank space instead of adsense ad blocks.

I've seen blank ads for weeks. Thought it was normal based on lack of inventory (when running Ad Balancer aggressively).

We're experiencing the same issues, started a few days ago. Lots of blank ads especially on newly created dynamic pages with well established advert slots.

Same here - no ads (or limited personalized) are showing. Contextual ad appears after Mediapartners bot scanned page. Looks like Google implemented a new algorithm for determining page content.

@rustybrick numbers are still way down.... something is up for sure. They either changed the way their algo reads the page / display ads or there is a bug.... I know that seasonality plays a factor, but not at the extend that I am experiencing right now.

I'm seeing this message in most of the adsense pages.

We apologise for the inconvenience, but we are unable to process your request at this time. Our engineers have been notified of this problem and will work to resolve it.

I'm looking at my website, all seems to be normal type of advertising by rpm is down to about 5 or 10 % of what it should be. Would be great if google would confirm that they will adjust payments retrospectively.

I saw two consecutive drops right about October 4th and then another one on December 13th. Do you guys see similar dates for your drop-off?

I would agree, the 13th is the drop off day for me as well. Wonder how long this will take for them to address?

Mine dropped 13 dec but recovered 15 dec before a larger drop on 18 dec, so I would say the main problem was 18 dec.

The 18 dec was also the day that ad coverage dropped from 99% to 80%, and has not yet recovered - this only affected certain sites though: as example I have sites still around 99% coverage and others as low as 50% coverage, so I can understand why some people are not seeing the problem.

I have ad balance set to 100% and, as mentioned above, if the page is refreshed after a few minutes ads are shown correctly so they are available, it is not a lack of available advertisers causing the problem.

@davewave they will not correct this retrospectively because if ads are not shown there are no earnings and no advertisers to charge

@Rasputin, I'm seeing adverts fine, but the performance suddenly dropping by 90% is strange. As is the fact that I can't run any reports as its saying there is an error. Hence I conclude there is an issue with the reports/payment rather than the ads themselves.

Davewave, perhaps your problem is not the "blank ads" people are describing above but simply a temporary adsense reporting problem

Curious how one would know if their ads are blank ? All I know is that traffic has been constant but it appears revenue from mobile and tablet has dropped off 70% since the 13th. Not sure what to do at this point.

@Rasputin, a December 18th drop-off is normal, as most e-commerce advertisers are stopping their holiday campaigns (usually the 19th/20th though).
As for everything else, the drops I mentioned were severe, although my coverage was not affected at all - except for those periods with ad-balance testing on my side.

So coverage in itself should not be the issue here.

There is an issue with coverage dropping sharply December 18th that has happened to a lot of people but not everyone. There is a very long thread in Google Adsense forums with a lot of publishers that have chimed in with the same issue. Google support has been contacted by a lot of publishers and they were told it is being investigated. Yes, it is a holiday week so it does make it hard to investigate but the sharp drop in coverage is the issue here. I have over a decade of reporting to look at and have never seen such a drop in coverage.

I've set up my DFP so that there will never be blank ad space. AdSense competes against other networks and finally I have the "backup network" set at lowest possible CPM 0.01 and even after that I have matched content coming up to fill 100% everything else. So there is no way that I could get an empty ad space. But I've seen them A LOT since 18th December. Almost at every page opening there is an empty space. My coverage in AdSense is now under 50 %.
