Got email today from the Inside Adwords Blog that over the next few days they were going to be incorporating landing page quality scores and tweaking their algorithms throughout the Content Network (similar to what they did for Search this summer)

Me, I'm all for it from both sides (AdWords and AdSense)

couldn't this change result in a fall in income for publishers?

MFA sites previously bidding as low as possible and so inflating the price "real" advertisers have to pay to have their adverts displayed on content sites. If the MFA's are penalised and so priced out of the market, wouldn't the average price paid by "real" advertisers then fall and publishers income with it?

I really can't see Google implementing anything that will lose them money.

epc up, quality of ads up to a level I have not seen since the launch of adsense :)

Day #2 and the ringtones and bogus survey ads still gone. Thanks Google! :-)

Me too, and I even emptied my filter of most entries, leaving only the big auction sites, rival search engine sites and large department stores.

That's because many of those running those types of ads are running hundreds of thousands of ads and probably haven't had time to adjust their campaigns where needed.

let's see if it's not rather the higher bid price that keeps them from running their annoying ads..

I'd agree overall, but this is not so for one of my sites, which targets a specific localised region.

The last couple of days I'm seeing absolute rubbish - national and international ads (mostly off topic) instead of the relevant, regionally targeted ads I was seeing.

I suspect the ad price increases are bad news for the small, local businesses whose ads used to appear on this particular site.

I've also noticed a very nice increase in EPC and eCPM over the last 2 days or so. but i haven't cleared out my competitve ad filter yet... just wondering what other's thoughts on this are?

Hmmm, I will have to wait longer before to make assumptions. Do you guys have a ton of traffic you can noticable tell? It almost appears as if mine went down. Isn't it to early to really tell?

yes, lots of traffic. I just had my site targeted cpm disabled, so I don't know if the noticeable increase in cpc and ecpm is from that or from the new QS! or maybe both. either way, i'm happy.

I can tell. 400 clicks a day is average for me. So far the last two days have been the same as the previous 45 or so give or take say 3 percent.

Yesterday I had a record day.

Today, it appears as if I will easily surpass yesterday.

Whatever they did, I am all for it :)

And I believe I have a high quality website that offers great value to its visitors and not some crap mfa site, so I think this is a win for the good guys.

I'm in exactly the same situation. Thank you Google!

Hmmm ... even my MFA sites are showing better EPC.

even my MFA sites are showing better EPC.

Makes sense. So long as they are getting traffic they should be....

That's because this change has zero to do with the websites running the ads. It's all about adwords advertisers and their sites they are advertising for.

So... should we be dropping our current filter lists?

I wouldn't drop filter list. It wouldn't increase your earnings, but you may be attacked by "former blocked" ads :)

Hmmm mine seems to have gone down. I do not at all have a MFA site, but a quality unique one with animations and videos of my own.

Although I can't say I had lots of MFAs before in my subject category, so can I ask you guys this question.

If I diddn't have lots of MFAs before in my ads, it wouldn't really affect me that much correct? It may just be the normal swing of traffic on my site, but since nov 8th it appears to have beeng oing down with same number of clicks/impressions.

I cleaned out my competitive filter and not only has my revenue gone up, but the quality of ads has gone w-a-y up. The sites that were being filtered must have gotten nailed by the new QS.

I'm seeing a decline in one industry and an increase in another. Decline is in a very narrow B2B niche...no one involved with it wants to click on the same old auction site {keyword} ad or comparative shopping {keyword} ad. CTR way down.

Increase is in an industry with broader consumer appeal.

High ECPM today. And much higher than any day this past week. Not ready to chock it up to Quality score yet, because it's still within my high end average. Think I'll have to see if this becomes a trend or not.

I just completed a week of running a test where I blocked MFA's. As of 20 hours ago I emptied my competative filter. Even so, only one MFA ad seems to be showing. I assume this is somehow related to the AdWords Quality Score changes.

overall ctr down and epc up so far. just as could have been expected.

i emptied my (small) filter list today to see if one of them creeps in.

"So... should we be dropping our current filter lists?"

Why would you want to drop the filter list? It's better to be safe and keep the "bad guys" away from your website.

I tend to agree with you. Blocking unwanted ads is a good thing.

However, if you are operating at the limit of the filter list, then you might want to re-build your list completely to even more improve the user experience. If Google automagically takes away some of the ads previously blocked by you, then you waste precious filter space.

I will watch for a few more days and then I'll give it (i.e. a clean filter) another try before starting to re-build the list.

It is not good for me. My site is a high quality site with hits growing regularly over last two years. I don’t understand why I got affected.

Usually Saturday and Sunday are low traffic days for me, so I will wait for Monday and Tuesday before concluding any think.

just found out that google made Quality Score that is determined to a certain ad that appears on your site. if the landing page (page that ad brings your visitors too) is low quality site (ie. MFA site), then google determines that this ad will have to pay much more to appear on your site :)

As I believe Google has finally come up with something to get rid of MFA's! for us Adsense Publishers this is greta step, and I already see big rising in revenue..

thnks Google!
