It is not affiliate site only algo change. I think it is inbound link value change.
...but something that has amazed me is a competitors site that I know for a fact he's done nothing with for over 2 years (he's a friend) is now ranking for all his top terms

Long tail shouldn't be controlled by a few mega-sites that are deep-crawled and cover hundreds of thousands of millions of key phrases. It makes sense to me to try to spread the results around to get a better sampling.

It has always been a symbiotic relationship where all parties should stand to potentially benefit.

I think Google's notion that lots of inbound links = quality content are and have always been fatally flawed.
Google need to accept that this is a flawed system to base your main ranking factor on.
