To see if search engines and update services are blocked or not in WordPress, check the settings in Dashboard -> Options -> Privacy -> Blog Visibility.
Without any external links, Google is not likely to index any site, whether it's a blog or not.(Emphasis Added)
I will have to disagree. I develop many domains and have yet to actually submit any of them. Of course I do link-work but even before any links have been created Google indexes the domain (even if it's just the home page).
This has been the case ever since Google became a registrar. They will look at any registered domain and if it's not parked and has even one page (e.g. Coming Soon), it will index the page.
This has been my experience.
It's done when you submit your first post.
Pingomatic in turn pings google owned feedburner.
within a few minutes google blog search picks up the listing. It can be pinged [blogsearch.google.com...]
within a few more minutes the page is picked up in the main google database.
If I am missing anything that anybody knows about please post it, there is no reason not too the cat is out of the bag.

Every Tool is built directly into one interface
That can be a huge benefit since you don't have to use a lot of tools to get answers about your blog.
I have both Google Blogger and Wordpress, and I manage many of high ranked industries however both blogs are equal in traffic but when it comes to business conversion it all depends upon if your content is valued to the engine.
Google, MSN and Yahoo can now understand real edits to automated edits. Effecting in a much more intense and un-explained de-indexing within the next months during the filter sift of MSN and Yahoo once the two engines meet one database. Yes. We have a development domain that only 2 people here in the office know about and both of us have the G toolbar and google started indexing the site shortly after I initially uploaded the site.
So it's either the toolbar or registry information IMO.

OK, there's a thought as Domain tools dot com and/or AboutUs.org create pages about every new domain as they come online and Google indexes their site.

Search engines find sites plenty easily these days without links or a blog on the domain pinging Technorati et al.
Google does seem to index Blogger blogs a bit quicker, but in the long run, so what. Does it really matter if you are indexed this today or next week. If it does, you probably don't have a site people are that interested in anyway.
Sure if you have breaking daily news, then you better get indexed by the crawlers often and timely. However, if you have a new website (domain) and rely on the website crawlers to discover you within hours to disseminate your news, then your expectations are flawed.
By the way, to get the fastest reaction from Google in my experience is to put AdSense code on it (and view it in your browser). The crawler comes within a couple of hours. You can remove it later, if you want, the crawler has now an initial copy and will come back. But this is Google only!
What is the subject of the blogs? Could adult filters stop your blogs from being displayed in the results?
How do you check that the blog is listed in Google?
I guess if you host your blogs on other people's platform, you can't access the logs, where you would see if the Google Bot does visit and read the robots.txt
Have you put some code like Google Analytics on the blog, so you can see if the search engines send you visitors?
