Ok, here are the related factors to what I am referring to as the "new google 2 kw filter", until somebody can come up with another name.
- 2 kw term
- used to rank very high, now vanished
- with " "'s returns to high rank
- does not affect rankings for other terms on same site
- home page involved
- only happens on google, still rank high on Y/MSN
- appears on only specific but changing data centers
- long standing site
-?
..... what else would you add to the list, please keep it simple and short
- Home page involved
- Without quotes main keywords gone.
- With quotes, main keywords appear in normal positions.
- Ranking fine on MSN/Yahoo
- Allintitle, Allinanchor each have us where we always have been.
- 6 year old site
- Up until yesterday morning (7/26) we were at least still holding on to some of the DC's. Yesterday morning however, we vanished from all DC's. Other change that occured yesterday morning was that the NOODP tag finally started working. *scratches head*
- Clean site.
- No purchasing of links.
One thing that really bothers me is that competitors have similar titles, etc and not affected at all by this. No one else is budging under the keywords we typically track. Just us, again.
Think thats pretty much it.

- 2 kw term.
- Was ranked #2 out of 515 million.
- With " "'s returns to high rank.
- Does not affect rankings for other terms on same site.
- Home page involved.
- Only missing in Google.
- On the web for 3 years.
- No ODP tag in place

That was my concern as of yesterday, but today, one of my main competitors is now suffering under the same filter.
So this filter is morphing and adjusting.
<soon you to will be under its spell bbbaaaaaaaahhaaaaaaaa (read with scary voice)>
Supplementals are still there, i'm going to upload the google sitemap again, that seemed to fix the supp. problem the last time.
I have detailed keyword logs back to 8am this morning, and it's already recovered by then, last night around 12 midnight it was still the old story.
Who's recovering as well? Please post the good/bad news!
The "site: ..." command now shows the main URL first for the site that came back. The other site still lists pages in a seemingly random order when I use the site command.
Secondly, for some reason - perhaps unrelated - I see two distinct snippets for my listings. When I do a 'site:www.domain.com' I get a snipett that I'd expect to see. When I do "keyword1 keyword2" inside quotes so my site reappears in the serps, the snippet is not the same - in fact the snippet for that listing is the navigation listing at the bottom of my homepage!
i.e. the snippet shows up as:
www.domain.com - home page1 page2 page3
bizarre.
Personally I'm going to let it settle out. If nothing changes in a week or so I'll take some of the onpage optimization stuff off.
"Excessive backlinks with the same anchor text being penalized for the search term that uses the anchor text".
I doubt it, too easy to stick sitewides/excessive backlinks on a competitor and watch them sink!
Of course, this may be the case and is only tremporary. One of our sites is still MIA showing all signs as listed above and we have done no big link work on this term.
a) Buying text links on external sites
b) Using the same anchor text
c) Ammassed a number of backlinks in a relatively short period of time
....are being hit with a filter.
But I don't think this analysis is totally new, just something that was more obvious and apparent within my sector today.
Sometime yesterday I started seeing a few kw1 kw2 kw3 results that disappeared but with ""s they are as expected.
The commonality I see is where kw1 kw2 -or- kw1 kw2 kw3 were ranked consistently over time (last 6 mos to 1 year) in the first 5 results - and- were very competitive terms. Les competitive 2 or 3 kw phrases that ranked #1-#5 remain in tact.
In one very competitive kw1 kw2 search today, 9 of the top ten are some form of price comparison site or auction/mall site.
The forum won't allow me to post the link...those of you who know which site I'm referring to, go there and check the Search engine news, posted 7/25 - by Terri Wells

Why two words mentioned? Three word searches just as likely to have the phenomenon.
" - does not affect rankings for other terms on same site"
Doesn't effect ranking of same *page* for different terms
"- home page involved"
Irrelevant. Nothing to do with home page. Subpages just as likely to be involved.
Phenomenon is years old, but far more widespread since the various screwups the past month.
Most of my IBLs have the 3KW version (kw1 kw2 kw3). And, the position of 3kw version started to decline, while the 2kw version (kw1 omitted, i.e., kw2 + kw3) climbed to top 5.
I think that the theory of excessive optimization filter (for anchor texts in IBLs) have a point here.
This happened last month if you look into the datawatch thread around June 14th I believe; back then, to a lesser extent, some sites were disappearing, but would reappear with the "" -- it lasted 2-3 days.
As for a name, how about reverse osmosis SEO? With as many filters as seem to be in play, it's as good as any. :)
Cygnus
Seemed to only be the root index after making some other checks on the site and now, even the root index appears back where I typically find it (pg1, slot 3-7)
Hopefully, it'll still be there when next I peek as well.

This makes me wonder if they are folding last months updates in with new updates to be live in a few days. Many people are saying in another thread that they are showing rank again after being gone since June 27th. Is it a coincidence that today is the 27th and 30 days have passed since the last major roll?
The results that are showing right now in my sector actually look pretty darn good, aside from the fact that my authority site is MIA. There is a good mix of all the major commerce sites as well as relevant informational authorities.
I have not been affected by an update in a negative way since Florida, Nov. 2003. As you can imagine going completely missing raises a big question mark. I'm not worried yet, it's much too early to speculate.
alternatively this is an update finito & i'll have to start selling 2nd hand newspapers again :(
also the filter is just not for 2 kw terms but individual kws as well as i have seen big drops for single for one of my sites which has been well ranked for several years (nice clean site)
it looks like the beginning of something or another stuff up sensu june 27
