I did the rounds to check on the state of various data updates. I'd estimate that the "0.5" (not algorithmic changes, but rather responses to various spam/porn complaints + processing reinclusion requests) should go out this weekend sometime or possibly Monday. There should be a binary push this week to improve a corner-case of CJK-related search, and that new binary should have the hooks to turn on the third set of data. Regarding finishing up the second piece of data, there's still two data centers with older data. Those data centers will probably be switched over by Monday. By Monday, 2.5 of the 3.5 things will probably be on.
Look more at pages of your site with no real text content, possibly only title, filename and a product picture with AdSense. This is what I had on my Future Movies and at the time I thought adding AdSense to these pages would give my users valuable alternative to the pages but Google thinks these pages as spam and wrongly penalised the whole site… I would not have minded just the penalised pages.
What made me really stressful was why did Google penalise my whole site and not just the pages considered spam! that really sucked for me because my site was considered to have exceptional content and the “spam pages” was unintentionaly provided by a very large leading US company and only a side line (I did not know they had added 60,000 pages!).
Its sad we will probably be waiting for 6 months for the penalty to be lifted… Jesus that’s like next year! Looking on the bright side I guess this update has killed off spam… well what about all those price comparison sites that show up for technology product reviews but contain no reviews at all....you all know the sites and I consider them all to be spammers.

even if there is 10% possibility that this now might be considered spam i am going to change it i think in few days as i always had in mind to do it but avoided it as the urls are years old and have 18 listings in dmoz. how i am going to make 18 dmoz editors to update the listings..... that is a hell.
also, Johan007. good point about little content and adsense presense. will make sure my pages with little content do not show adsense.
The posts saying Altavista ruined your business because they don't send you visitors anymore must be in another thread.
Steveb - you have a very dry sense of humour :)
Why doesn't everyone go have a beer and a hotdog and undwind a bit.
Glass of wine and a pizza for me :) (althought how many glasses of wine I am having to drink before G is done is anyones guess ;))
I remember 7 month ago, on every update my site was not affected in ANY negative way for maybe 3 years, then I got hit by the googlebug 302, its hard.
[aolsearch.aol.com...]
I think (and hope) that oldpro had a good point here.
We got hammered in Florida, came back in Allegra, and slipped again in Bourbon.
Business was bad after Florida, but it was bad anyway (9/11, war on terror, war on Iraq, war on every other b*****d, Bali bombing, SARS, tsunami etc etc) After Allegra, I was confident business would boost, but it didn't - Google hits up 50% but no change in business!
Conclusion, G results aren't worth a toss!
Our conversion is much better from traditional magazine ads etc (well I think it is - I'm useless at tracking where we get our business from, I'm probably useless at running a business come to think of it)
We're down again in Bourbon, but I don't think I'll lose sleep (yet)- I did too much worrying after Florida and it didn't get me anywhere
Chards lesson in commercial success - when the going gets tough, have a beer.
Low quality G traffic is what produces the high click-through on Adwords/Adsense and that's a major consideration for all webmasters. In the end, eyeballs are eyeballs, I suppose, but high quality traffic would be preferable.
True...click thrus are a major consideration for webmaster/adsense publishers because it pays the bills for them.
However, ultimately adwords advertisers are looking for conversion...I am sure Google is well aware of this. For instance... site A (adsense) generates tons of click thru's, but rarely converts thus a drag on google profits and less cost effective advertising for the adwords buyer. On the otherhand Site B (adsense) generates less click thru's, but converts better. Less expenses for google and more cost effective advertising for adwords buyers.
IMO, bourbon is all about increasing the preferrable high quality traffic you mentioned.
Then he added today: "I'd estimate that the "0.5" (not algorithmic changes, but rather responses to various spam/porn complaints + processing reinclusion requests) should go out this weekend sometime or possibly Monday.
..... By Monday, 2.5 of the 3.5 things will probably be on."
Therefore we should expect monday or Tuesday to show the "new rankings" as a result of the first 2.5 of Bourbon update.
We don't know much about how the serps will look like on Monday, but should we expect major positive changes for those sites that either lost their ranking on the serps or just disappeared?
Neither in his own two threads nor here in this thread GoogleGuy has mentioned anything about the said sites. Does that mean the current status of the said sites shall remain unchanged during the rest of the update and thereafter?
Let's say my site converted pretty well (which is probably the case - not so bad as to dump completely, but not so god to keep it at the top, where it was).
So, they push it down to page 7, 8 or 9, which is where it is. Not only do the same ads which appear on my site appear in the SERPs - before getting to my site - but G doesn't have to share revenue. Boosts the bottom line a little more.
Hey, I understand, it's business. Because it's business, that's also why I now support Yahoo and my new favorite, exalead.com. Check it out.

I have managed to pin point is that millions of sub-domains were created in the far east last year and they are definitely hit in bourbon 100% no doubt about that one.
These sub-domains you have pin pointed - what type of content do they have unique?, duplicate? near duplicate?
Just curious.
It would be foolish for Googleguy to say that sites that have been adversly affected by Bourbon would go one way or the other.
An algo change like that probably does not focus on individual sites - but the quality of the overall serps.
I would not look for such specific comments by GG - more universal :)
:) - You still loving the UK serps?
Oh - the good old days.
Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves:
Britons never never never will be slaves.
Except to Google it seems :) - (Just kidding GG)
Bourbon turning up the duplicate content filter is the most plausible reason I have found so far - but I'm by no means an expert. It's not the only possibility of course, there may be other reasons, but it's one I'll have to work on.
How to best modify my pages to "untrip" the filter? Add text? How much is enough?
checking all the datacenters my site/keyword has two different sets of results. its been that way for awhile.
the difference now is that it seems that the datacenter available to me for regular searching on my browser is changing from hour to hour. whereas before today the rotating dc thing was maybe in 8 to 12 hour shifts.
everflux algo's on top of everflux dc's
anybody else noticing this?
