Why:
The joke is on the freemail providers - their services just suck a measly 5mb! One attachment and your box is full. Half of them are probably quaking in their shoes at the prospect that this could be real.
The joke on the media - all the take up, reports, masses and masses of publicity - informing the public that google do more than search.
The joke on us: some of the guys here have spent hours discussing, whether it is or isn't a joke and could they do it. Plus they now have everyones email address.
And finally the joke is going to be on me if it is a real service :)

Hmmm... something fishy here! Good call beach lover! It sure doesn't seem like all the ducks are in a row if this was a real launch. If it IS a real launch... It's so shoddily done that it's scary. It's not the careful plotting perfection I would expect from Google.
Since Gmail isn't registered with the TM office... maybe I should register it and make Google buy it from me!

That was meant for Gates. I love a company with attitude.
Trademark Electronic Search System (Tess) contains more than 3 million pending, registered and dead federal trademarks.
I do NOT want to deliver targeted ads for my competitors with the communications to my clients.
I will also block the use of gmail domains on any of the free registration sites I own (forums etc).
The possibility for abuse is incredible. It would be child's play to, say, target an ad at webmasterworld members reading their email updates.
"Hi there, reading your email updates are you? Brett is in bed with Google go over here to this forum..."
You acn also disparage people by targeting a negative text to their name.
e.g. Fred Ggguuutt has a rare name. If someone gets mad at him they can target his name in ads.
So any time Fred sends mail to a gmail user, he might also be delivering the negative ad his enemy has targeted to his name.
Google will be vigilant for this but unless they pre-approve each and every ad and ad change there will be the potential for many variations of the abuse I detailed.

I think that is an extremely poor business decision.
10 million users of Google can't be wrong.
There exists those same abuse potential in yahoo and msn email. You can be assured that yahoo and msn will try to do the same thing once the gmail business model is realized.
Are you going to block all *@hotmail, *@yahoo, *@aol, *@msn email domains as well?
That's like 50% of people that use email.

Besides, if you want to come across as professional, do you use hotmail, yahoo, gmail, etc as your email for business purposes?
My opinion is that this is neither a joke nor a serious announcement -- it is just a trial balloon. It could go either way.
That said, I sent them my email address, and I hope they run with this thing.
