I have just installed a js into the head of a html page as per instuctions and it has caused the header banner to be pushed down about 2 lines.
I have tried body and css methods to try to get the header up to the very top of the page but without luck.
Any ideas please.

Welcome to WebmasterWorld, ralphd.

I would first suggest validating your HTML [validator.w3.org] at the W3C. If your syntax is correct, adding a script element to the <head> section should not affect the appearance of the page (unless, of course, the script itself is designed to change the page layout.)

What is the js supposed to do? I think you need to look at the js to try to figure out why this is happening.
