I get up this morning and much to my surprise my Sunday earnings are UP and Link Units contributed 30% of the income!
I sure hope this isn't a fluke.
On the original 40 pages Adlinks are doing stunningly well, much higher eCPM and about twice the CTR of the regular adsense bloc on those pages.
On the next group, about 100 pages, adlinks is doing well, quite a bit better than the old adsense blocks, but not nearly as well as on the 40 page group.
On a third group of pages (120 or so) adlinks are barely beating the original ads.
In total I now have adlinks on about 260 of my 1400+ pages and yesterday adlinks accounted for 30% of my income.
I don't expect that kind of performance, as a percentage of total earnings, to hold up as I put adlinks on more pages though.
The adlinks on the first group of pages I tried work so well that they are skewing the numbers. That group of pages was also my best performing group of photo pages from a CTR/eCPM perspective before adlinks went on them.
The middle group of pages I tried (100 pages) are more typical of my photo pages. Never been great, but ok.
The third group have always been at or near the bottom of the barrel as far as adsense performance on my site goes, and it looks like adlinks will match that record on them. Still worth doing at this point.
With a 1,000,000+ pageviews a month even pennies per click ad up! :)
hey BILL, did you ever mention how much traffic your site gets?
1.5M+ page views from about 400K visitors.
they're not getting any more low cost advertising on my #1 niche network!
How low is low?
I see some ads pay for $0.03 and some pay $0.80, you just never know.
Yesterday I only averaged $0.17 a click but when you get almost 1,000 clicks in a day it adds up :)
One area is not getting adlink clicks at all though. They are pages with short little blurbs but I can't see why that would matter. Longer articles are doing really well with adlinks. Sjows you have to keep stats.
May 1 - May 23 CTR avg. = 10.0% (not the real figure)
May 24 - May 31 CTR avg. = 13.3% (not the real figure)
May 1 - May 23 EPC avg. = .0687 (real figure)
May 24 - May 31 EPC avg. = .0789 (real figure)
As you can see, the day I added Ad Units (May 24), things got interesting and I was happy! You gotta smile when CTR and EPC both go up at the same time (as long as your traffic is at least steady).
Hey, that's great! I'm pullin' for it to keep going strong for you. And for me too. I do this full-time from home myself, just like you. I left the "rat race" of corporate America in early 1997 and haven't looked back. It's not always fun or easy, but it keeps me on my toes.
Someone famous once said something about how boring life would be if it was all easy. I gotta go along with that, although I'd like a few more easy days to go along with the ones that just ain't no fun.
If you have a target demographic audience which is on the lower side of the tech-savvy spectrum, you are more likely to get a good CTR. Couple this with a substantial traffic flow, like 400K visitors/1000k clicks, and you got it made.
Off topic a bit but I was only doing about 100K visitors/month 12 months ago and then I read something right here on WW that hit me between the eyes - talk about a major "DUH! WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT?!"
What was "THAT"?
Localizing keywords, making the site rank on country, state and city searches for things like "new zealand widgets", "alabama widgets", "california widgets", "san francisco widgets", etc. That one little revelation probably added 100K visitors/month on it's own.
This may not be applicable to all sites, but if your site can target local traffic, it's worth the time and effort IMO.
Very odd change in AdSense last 5 days my big ticket high paying skyscraper is taking a backseat to the leaderboard and adlinks.
Not that I'm complaining as revenue is up even more...
Wonder what it would take to get me the rest of the way to the "UPS Club" from here? :)

I've also found that to be very helpful in building traffic.
Back to the adlinks, etc.
Not doing quite as well as when I first installed them, but WELL worth trying out.
Like all of Adsense, they seem to work much better on some pages than others. The only way to know is to try them out.

Aren't you stacking adlinks on top of skyscrapers? In that case, it would seem that the earnings from adlinks are coming partly at the expense of skyscapers. So if you account for the difference, how much better are you doing?
Aren't you stacking adlinks on top of skyscrapers?
Yes, I am, but that didnt matter for the first 5-6 days.
Suddenly the leaderboard just took off making money hand over fist and it's always been kinda second banana. The skyscraper is still making good coin, but the leaderboard went nuts. I'm wondering if Google isn't tinkering with how AdSense picks where the better paying ads show up again.
Leaderboards used to be my biggest earner, but lately they seem to make just a few cents a click for me. For some reason I find the higher paying clicks come from large squares surrounded by the content.
Experimented with adlinks last few days, placed them prominently top left above the nav bar......Thus far found they paid peanuts on my site....Horses for courses.
Since adding AdLinks my average earnings PER DAY are now $100 more a day consistently over a month ago and this has been the solid trend since the day after I added AdLinks. So far this week EVERY DAY has broken the previous AdSense highest earnings day which is wild meaning monday set a record, broken on tuesday, broken on wednesday again, $20 increase in 3 days.
We shall see if the trend continues today as it's $10 behind with only an hour to go - a nailbiter.
The reason I ask is because maybe there has been a spike in interest in your market area lately, due to a change in consumer trends somehow -- the reasons of which could by themselves be inumerable.
So, could it be that there are other factors besides your recent changes with Adlinks?
what niche/area are you in?
Let's just say I'm in a very broad and very popular commercial and hobbyist industry segment. I'm hesitant to mention the exact niche area as I can be spotted easily and I've been stamping out non-search engines crawling my site all week. Don't need any lurkers scraping as I get enough of that already.

Based on traffic, trends and other stats on my web site nothing has significantly changed but AdLinks inclusion. Same old traffic, just site changes making the difference best I can tell. I can guarantee if I yank AdLinks it'll go back to what it was in a heartbeat as the channels are pretty consistent based on what I was earning before.
They work great given that on those particular pages it was not feasable / aethetic to run AdSense.
Yay! Thanks for starting this thread Bill! -O)

When you determine that making money and aesthetics don't always have each others interest at heart and truly sell out the site you'll be much happier dancing all the way to the bank. Took me a few years to determine I preferred the life of the advertising whore over the aesthetics and you can't pay the bills or eat aesthetics.

You're quite welcome :)
The problem with adding additional adblocks seemed to be that the additional adblocks were discounted and so you could lose higher paying clicks to lower paying clicks.
Any evidence that the adlinks are discounted if they appear lower on the page than an adblock?
It also seems to work well on pages with broad focuses, like my home page. Putting AdLinks on a couple of high-traffic but narrowly focused pages, has not done well for me.
The success with my home page made me think that AdLinks would be usable other places, but so far I've not found one that works...

Seems to vary from site to site but I'd guess it reduced my overall average earnings per click about $0.03 but made up for it in the massive volumes of new clicks resulting in $100/day increase most days since it was added.
1)The visual qualities* + ad content/match of Adlinks units themselves (which can be thought of as sort of an aesthetic attribute) actually enticed so many more visitors to click Bill's ads than normal.
2)Even though the earnings per click seem to be lower with Adlinks units, the sheer volume of increased CTR (because of premise 1, above) has substantially offset this.
*(by "visual qualities" of Adlinks units,I mean the novelty of their appearance compared to Adsense blocks, and their ability to blend in/integrate with other hyperlinks)
But the necessary preconditions for this must still come down to:
content(quantity+quality) + traffic(quantity+quality) + ad quality
