Hi

For Looksmart : I am really in dilemma.

I have a website and it is listed in Looksmart way back. The problem is, whenever I search with my various targeted keywords, the sub category pages of my site comes up in the search results and those pages are ranked well, instead of my home page. As far as my home page is concerned, I optimized it quite well for those targeted keywords. Looks interesting that sub category pages ranks well where as it should be the home page which should rank well.

Anybody having any clue?

Waiting for response.

Hello MrRoy,

Why do you think the homepage should appear first? I think most users prefer on topic sub category pages. Be happy as long as they show up fine.

The sub category pages show up because they are more on target. You can only optimize a page for so many words.

Actually, you cannot "optimize" your pages with meta & copy for the Looksmart directory.

LookSmart's search primarily relies on pulling out very specific keyword phrases directly from the editor-given title (link) & description, plus the branch of the category where your sites page(s) are listed.

Your subpages may be coming up for a few reasons:

1) these subpages have their own listings in the LookSmart/Zeal directory & those keywords you're finding them with do appear within the description & title that the editors wrote.

2) it's merely backfill from the Inktomi database, which does spider your site & is easier to "optimize" for general terms.

3) Your homepage isn't listed at all - check the exact url & make sure it has a category listing.

Worry less about where your pages rank in LookSmart itself, but moreso where those directory listings from LS appear in MSN's search, under "web directory sites"
