Private conclusion:
PR = Public Relation as one wrote in this post.

I made the mistake of checking "notify me of replies" before I submitted a post on page 25.
And besides, PR's back up, the ordeal is over, and the only thing people are discussing now is speculation over Google's ethics, algo's and investor relations.
So please start a new thread. Anybody. Please!
...at least for the sake of my tired inbox.

Another reason that it generated so much comment was that once again, Google chose to say nothing about the problem. PR indeed! If they had a status report on their home page they could tell people when things are gubbed and there would not be so much speculation (or panic on some occasions.)
Let’s assume this was in some way deliberate. If a message had been posted by G there would have been little to talk/panic about. I am sure this little exercise, weather planned or not has provided the G buffs with just that little bit more knowledge about the SEO world. No one other than the optimisers gives a rats a*# about PR. SEO's are the thorn in Google's side so why should they be concerned about their public relations to us?
As far as 'PR' is concerned it is a complete waste of time. Like someone said on this forum, it makess webmasters feel like they're doing something, going somewhere. It's a great marketing tool and tracking method for Google but doesn't do much for me.
I see sites that have a pr of 4 above sites that have 7 etc...
Before linking to anysite I find out who it is, where they are, check spamhaus.... then if that looks good I spend some time looking at the site itself -

They probably aren't but then the PR tool is provided to everyone, not just webmasters and SEOs. How many people use things like Froogle, University Search, Print Search, Translate, etc. Probably not many but when G knows that any of their services are not working a status bar could be used to let their users know about this. This is just common courtesy.

Of course you do. Many PR4 sites are more relevant than PR7 sites for specific searches. That has always been the case.
