a while back a thread asked for google referral stats, e.g., "Pages indexed by Google: 63; Number of daily referrals: 5 - 10; PR: 5."

i get curious as to the metrics of google referrals relative to keywords' stature. what i mean is say, for ex, i have a 2-keyword phrase, returns 48k results, i'm ranked #3, yet i receive only 2 or 3 hits as a result. assuming the description accompanying the word is ok, is this unusual?

in another example, i come in #1 for a 3-wrd phrase that brings 900k+ results, yet rarely receive any traffic at all.

other people's experience similar? not?

The results arent necessarily sites targetting those phrases - it just means that x amount of pages are relevant to those terms in the eyes of Google.

So 900k+ pages may be relevant to UK blue widgets, but the average surfer may be searching for blue widgets in the UK.

Each phrase will display different results in most cases.

Not getting any traffic when number 1 just means that no-one is searching for that term.

You can use tools such as wordtracker to find out how many people are searching for a particullar keyword within the past 2 months and how many sites are competing.

You are better off targetting a popular keyword and ending up 5th than being 1st for a term that no-one searches for.

I suggest you give a try at "your key phrases" with quotes. This will show you different figures with the exact keyphrases used.

You could also use overture keywords suggestion tool to compare the approximate monthly demand of your keyphrases. I hope this will help you.

thanks, but i guess i wasn't being clear. i'm not looking for demand for keywords, but the actual traffic inidviduals are getting from them. it would only be possible to ascertain this info from peoples' individual experience with particular keywords, like those in my example.

here's a specific question as an example: how many hits do you get per day from a keyword/phrase where you rank #1, 2, or 3 and where that keyword returns 500k - 750k results on google?

i am looking to get a general idea of, on average, how much traffic a person gets from x-keyword/phrase if it's in position 1, 2, 3, etc., in serps.

The problem is that one person could getting 10k visits a day from being number one for a phrase that has 700k results.

Another person could get 2 visits a day from being number one for another phrase that has 700k results.

So it all depends on demand.

There is a thread kicking about that some rough percentages have been posted.

Its along the lines of:

Position: 1 - 70% of the traffic
2 - 15%
3 - 5%

And so forth (figures guessed for effect).

Basically number one gets a lot more than the rest, but depending on demand, being 2 - 10 can also be profitable for you.
