Hi, firstly this is a awesome forum, just wish I had discovered it earlier :-)

Anyway I am new at this, but have a question about keywords in titles. What I would like to know is if I want to target a specific phrase i.e map of whatever, is it best to have just the phrase alone or add a few more key words i.e map of whatever and blah blah its just that I have noticed with av that the title of just the map of whatever heads the list and does this applie to other se? I hope this makes sense...Cheers

Hello maccas and welcome to WebmasterWorld.

"Map of Whatever" is a killer title (if "Whatever" is a frequent keyword) It works well with most engines and should be left standing alone. You could start the description like this:

"This Whatever map shows major roads and communities in Whatever and gives driving directions for My-place-of-business....." etc, as appropriate. Notice how the sequence of words is re-arranged in the beginning.

How big is your sit? this may help you decide what key word density you need on your head or index page. Also how confident are you of te quality of the key phrase.

If its a dynamite key phrase and it will run in your title and decription then the higher the density the better, in my opinion. ie keep it short and spread your other words or phrases on secondary pages

If your site is only a few pages this gets more tricky.

ps check the phrase in your local volume engines and directories in NZ

My site is going to be about 40 pages a search query at goto shows around 2000 for that particular phase plus it is often misspelt.

40 pages gives you the ability to use many mis-spelt and mis-typed keywords or phrases in the tags of the lower order pages, which may increase your visitors

I think it is important to almost do BOTH maccas. One page with a long title and another page with a short title. When you look at search engine results, how many pages to do see in the top ten, that have short titles? Not that many. I think you need some pages with your keyword title laced with fluff words (adverbs, prepositions, adverbs...etc - stay away from nouns).
