I am so confused that I really need some help.
I am currently working on increasing the number of hits to a travel website and one of the things that needs to be done is improving the current keywords.
I've done lots of research on the best keywords to use and I've come up with a combination of keywords rather than single words.
After reading lots of previous posts on this issue, I am now concerned that this is the wrong way about it.
For example, the site is a backpacker hostel. The word backpacker is extremely popular and on its own, my client would never get any hits using this word.
But if I combine it with Melbourne and accomodation (spelt wrongly), this search string does really well.
So do I submit backpacker Melbourne accomodation all together or do I have to do each of these words separately. I also want to use some of these words in other combinations ie: hostel Melbourne
Will this be turfed out by search engines for using keywords more than once.
Please help, I'm so confused!
I use single keywords and keyword phrases in my meta tags, but more importantly I make sure that those single words and phrases are used in the page text itself. It can make the language a little awkward using keyword phrases and getting them to read well, but it can be done. It's working fairly well for me, and I'm certainly not seeing any penalty for it.
Consensus from what I've read is that you can repeat keywords in the meta tags, but don't use a word more than three times.
In general, the meta keywords tag is much less important than it used to be (Google doesn't look at it), so identify the keywords and/or phrases for use in the page as deejay points out. (page title, headings, and a couple times in body text, link text to the page, etc)
If I use a meta keywords tag I put 3 or 4 words separated by commas, no spaces, and call it good.
