What is more important when it comes to your result placement in SE's

PR? On page optimization? In-bound links?

I'm pretty new to the game and I've been intently learning for the past couple days.

Say for example I want to reach the top result in google for the keyword "Fitness Motivation"

So I make a page with that title specifically, i base the whole page around that one article along with the meta tags, and the link density is perfect n' everything is good to go...

How far will THAT ALONE get me in the results for that keyword? I know there are other factors, like how many in-bound links from other sites are linking to that particular page, and how many the site has in general (a reflection of PR),

but say the Top 2 results have PR6's on that specific page alone, will I need a PR6 on my document to compete? Will I need to match or exceed the amount of in-bound links they have both to their domain and that specific page?

Say for example my on-page optimization happens to be better than the top 2 results, but I only have a PR5 and they have PR6, will I make it above them? or no.

Basically I'm just wondering if there's any type of conclusive data that suggests the relevance and importance of the different areas of SEO over one another when it concerns result placement.

Thanks!

Hello, dreamache and welcome to WebmasterWorld and to SEO! Yes, there's conclusive data that you need both onpage optimization and incoming links/PR but not as to the amounts. How much of each really depends on how competitive that phrase is. And some here argue PR is more important than other.

It looks like you have a good grasp for so little time spent! Keep up the reading - use the libraries in the forums - and you should be seeing results soon.

SideNote: When you refer to a KW phrase, always use 'widgets', 'blue widgets', etc. instead of a *real* KW phrase. The mods will edit your posts, otherwise.

You will also want to get inbound links with your keywords in the anchor text. Other than that, I will say you have enough knowledge (judging by your post) to start in the right direction.

My personal experience to this topic is this.

For about a year I played and played with onpage things and could only get my site to rank 17 for my particular two word phrase. After reading posts and the importance of linking with keyphrase in hypelink I decided to go after links in my category.

After getting links and a Google Dance I finally obtained rankings on the first page, usually spots #1 through #5 and have stayed there since. About three years now.

Get some links.

Thanks for the responses!

One more question, say for example you have first page results across a number of keywords related to your subject, and they're all pages that are articles you write... (you basically have a nice PR)

When I write more articles, the PR that is passed down to the new articles (from my main page), is that the only determining factor of my placement amongst the result placement of these new articles? Or will it take into consideration the placement of my other pages and perhaps push it past other results who might even have a higher PR?

Thanks.
