Ok guys, her goes. I have been corrisponding with a Russian girl. She contacted me through Yahoo personals. I did a google search for her IP address and came up with your site. It gave me a message posted by another guy, and I could almost quote his letter. His letter was posted on 1/25/04. In fact, if it is ok, I will quote his letter.

Ok here it goes, I have been talking to a woman in russia that i meet from one of them dating sites. I have heard alot about scams "russian woman scamming on the guys in the USA and she did ask for (money for a plane and visa ect..) so i did some checking to see what was going on. So she writes me some letters saying shes writing from one of them coffee shops with the computers in them. So i figure i could at least trace it to the coffee shop ( the town ) and in most cases this would be the case but when i trace the e-mail it's in or around moscow and she said she live in omsk russia (about 3000 miles from moscow)!
Now im not sure if it's is moscow or around it, maybe one of the citys next to it? It don't say and i want to know for sure the city the ip is at. I checked and couldn't find much about it.

Now i just did a check and its giving me an error but it still pionts to somewhere by moscow. I'll post the new ip when i get another letter.

Thanks in advance you guys

Thorlord

This one says she is writing from her bosses computer in a bar in Kazan, Russia. Although the last letter supposedly came from Moscow. The Kazan IP address was 1 digit off from the Moscow IP address.
The Moscow IP address is 194.x.23.121
The Kazan address is 194.x.23.122
I have already sent the money for the visa. She says that she has gone to moscow to obtain the visa, and has been told she can't get it without a round trip airline ticket. Let me quote that letter also.
Good afternoon mine dear and loved Roger
It is very unpleasant to me to speak you this news, but to me have
rejected my application on issue of visa.
It is valid very bad news.... All over again in embassy all went well,
until then, when to me have told, that I have showed tickets, I have
answered them, that at me they are not present... They have destroyed
all my documents and have told me, that will not give out the visa
until then while I shall not show them return tickets. Return tickets
are necessary for the proof of that I independently can return to
Russia as to me have told, " to us tramps in USA " they are not
necessary for me have told, that will give out the visa when I shall
bring tickets. They gave me the address of airline British Airways as
they have assured me, this most safe airline and it will be the best
to buy tickets there.
Later we with my girlfriend at whom I have stopped in Moscow have gone
to office of this airline, I have learned, that cost of tickets up to
in one party will make 803 dollars, to me have told, that if will take
return tickets the discount at a rate of 5 % is given, it turns out
that 803+803=1606 dollars and will subtract 5 % these are 80 dollars
that will make 1526 dollars, but still it is necessary to add to this
sum of 10 % from cost for registration of tickets and meal, it will
turn out 1679 dollars, is the cheapest tickets of an economic class,
is cheaper a way to arrive to you I is not present. Still to me have
told, that I should buy tickets and in Russia... Dear, I do not know
that to me to do, I am simply broken off on pieces, I am ready to go
on foot in USA if it was possible, but I so to you have become
attached, that simply can not live without you and I shall do
everything, that in my forces.
Dear, I of you shall ask last request about which I of you I shall ask
in general, you will ask the rest me, I shall ask to help me with
arrival to you, I understand, that it is huge money, was the income
mine for 16 months, but these prices for tickets only on very rich
people. And I of you ask to help me, your loved kitten. Money I think,
that it will be necessary to cable through Western Union, the address:

dear, you my last hope also is last request to you... I hope, that you
understand me, you mine love and I can not live without you! At us
with you still all ahead, we a single whole. Because we like each other.

Your eternal love (name removed)

I want to believe this girl, but I have a deep down feeling that I am being scammed.
Can anyone give me some advice, or info?
Thanks.
Roger

If you look at the email headers, it should show you the IP address of the sender; you can then look up the IP address using a variety of tools to see what company was assigned that IP range, also you can try a tracert on the IP address - most ISPs tend to name their servers geographically, ie dal.tx.foobar.isp.com - and you could conclude that they were located in Dallas, Texas, for instance.

Try googling for a "reverse dns tool" - it should give you some answers.

So, this topic is about scams and not much to do with IP tracking? Sorry to hear about all these stories, but sometimes a little common sense helps. Though, it's hard to tell.

(I was looking for some IP tracking methods to use.)

I'm sure theres got a be a way of stopping these scams somehow, maybe just by playing along and finding about the scammer as much as possible: ie, getting the IP address of the person doing the mailings, asking for that bank account of where to deposit the money and then handing all this informaiton to either their country's police or your local police.

Its not that hard to track people over the internet, someone in authority should be able to put a stop to this...

Whether it's face to face in a pub, or in a church, or via handwritten scented letters, or by phone, or over the net, someone, somewhere, is just achin' for a heartbreakin' every single minute of every hour of every day, and someone else is all to willin' to seize on that vunerability for their own benefit.

Most such scams go unreported because they get uncovered so late in the game that the embarassment is too severe to ever acknowledge the con publically.
Even people who are warned quite clearly and have suspicions don't find it easy to let go of a dream, as several posts in this thread have so amply demonstrated.

Absent another 40 days and nights of rain and flood catching some folks rather unprepared, I wouldn't be expecting any major changes in the nature of mankind anytime soon.

Hi again guys;
Since I first posted the question and the story about the beautiful Russian scammer, I have found that this is becoming like a plague. It seems to be a cottage industry in Russia. Just this past week, I have had 3 different women write to me from Ghana, suposedly. I had one of them send me pictures, and traced the ip on that. She was actually in San Mateo, Calif. Still she wants help with her plane fair from Ghana. Oh man. So, it is not only from women outside of the US, but women here, that say they are somewhere else. All scamming.

3 women?

Has it ever crossed your mind that the IP address just might be fake?

I'm aware that there are some cloaking software that'll hide your IP with some different numbers.
