We haven't talked much about Yahoo's acquisition of Hotjobs here.

"Today (Yahoo) announced that the technology integration of HotJobs and Yahoo! has been completed, marking the final integration milestone since Yahoo!'s acquisition of HotJobs in February 2002. "

I'm getting scared about all the stuff Yahoo's doing, it's acquiring tremendous power and influence (even more than before) in the online world.

Any thoughts about what this means and the impact it may have?

I think Yahoo forgot what got them to where they used to be.

well i think HOT JOBS is an attempt by yahoo to " own" a product that generates revenue with direct access to a client base. currently, yahoo gets visitors from from email, personals, messenger, chat, etc., all of which generate zero revenue. yahoo sells advertising based on its ability to draw these visitors to their site. if business ad budgets decrease for any reason, yahoo feels this decrease instantly in their bottom line. meanwhile, yahoo's main competitors, AOL and MSN, have DIRECT access to a client base that yahoo does not have (aol-IP service, MSN-software ). this worries yahoo as they are almost totally dependant on 3 party advertisers for revenue.

Oh it's all very interesting.

It's not specific for Yahoo, but i am seeing very many companies going for larger than the world thing.

I thought Microsoft was large enough, now they are moving in to new markets in PDA and Home products (tips take a view at comdex.zdnet.com)

And Vodafone is getting huge in the telecom industry while other companies are going down (Orange, and let's not mention Vivendi)

I see a clear trend of companies which are very big in there own market, buying other smaller companies which is regional specific but still successful, Vodafone has done this very good, while for example Orange starts new offices, and it hasn't worked so far, it was the same with Vivendi.

The Yahoo trend seems to be a mixture of both, i do really hope it works for them though.
And i remember that the Google Jobs where always presented at HotJobs ;)

I don't think the synergy between the two has been that great yet. IMHO.

MSN and AOL are both business partners of Monsters (TMP Worldwides Job Board).

They get content feeds and cv database, etc for their sites (I believe they use seperate sub domains for these).

Yahoo's just up its services to compete.

On a smaller scale, Monster did, what Lazerzubb describes - bought up lots of smaller recruitment agencies a while back, so they are all <insert agency name> TMP Worldwide. I believe Melville Craig was one of the bigger acquisitions (Im not sure if thats an international agency, but they do have a strong UK presence).

Interestingly there was an article on Googles news search a few days ago saying that Monster influence in Europe was minimal, but strong in the US. I believe Hotjobs is predominately US based as well.

Im sure there must be some Euro businesses going along the same line though.

Just found out a bit more info...

...Yahoo seemed to have stepped in at the last minute before a proposed merger between Hotjobs and TMP worldwide.
