I do web design and I have about 20 sites. The PR's range from 4-6.

I was thinking if I put a link tree at the bottom of all my sites linking them all together with the links being keywords would that help thier ranking and popularity?

Looking for your wisdom. Thanks!

I've been using the cross linking strategy very successfully for the last 18 months. I don't understand what the problems are, it works well for us. I've seen a lot of other SEOs doing it too, seems to work for them too. Provided you're not spamming it should be fine (you know hidden text etc)

To expand a bit more SuperBob on chiyo and Dante_Maure comments being under the "Google" radar is 99 times out of 100 the reason many sites live long with heavy crosslinking and other more detrimental spam tactics (not inferring you are spamming, just a generalization).

In many cases, the radar gun can get pointed directly at you by someone else (possibly a compertitor) who hasn't had great online successful but knows a bit about SEO and spam and sends a spam report.

The simply fact is none of these tactics are illegal, but I tend to live on the side of caution with a fair buffer. I have many clients that are my livelyhood, should the gun turn this way, I have much more to lose than just a web site with traffic.

Fees, bonuses, reputation, integrity, and ultimately a business that can sustain me long after I retire.

Short-term (and even long-term) gains are possibly, but if you ride right on the edge, the "crash" tends to be more than most companies can bare.

I've also experienced short term success with crosslinking my sites. But lately I've been getting a bad feeling about it when reading all your fine posts.

I have around 50 sites (seperate domains) linking to each other all are related topics in the travel industry (cities). Most of the links are on a subpage pointing
to the domains and some on the main page.

Because it's in the same industry travel is this safe or should I drop my links?

No one can really say for sure. I would tend to believe the "travel theme" is on the side of good.

If the domain's themselves are of the same IP octual block (same server) and limited uniqueness, the risk factor go up.

The wild card is the competitive factor, will someone else who has something to gain create a "closer look" from Google (or any other search engine) and they determine your link structure is solely for ranking manipulation... well you know the rest.

Risk is risk, and risk management dictates if you can't afford the loss, you shouldn't be playing the game.

If your site traffic and domains are highly disposible -- well then the risk is minimal.

thanks fathom it makes sense. I hate to move the domains because the isp is so reliable but getting dropped by google is not worth the risk.
