All else being equal, and assuming arguendo that my site is the only one linked on another site's page, is it better to get 100 incoming links from low-ranked sites or 5 incoming links from high-ranked sites?

Lawboy you answered your own question.

For me I think it comes down to the quality of the links rather than the quantity.

So if you can get 100 PR5 links vs say 100 PR3 links, your sites PR will grow more quickly.

Plus I think Google is not showing backlinks with a low PR even if it is counting them we cannot see it.

its only showing backlinks with PR4 or more.
