Hi

Is there anyway to record the queries made by visitors to your site that use your "Google site search" box if you add one to your webpage?

You could write a script which takes the input from that form and then sends the query to Google.

Your script could count queries or/and record search phrases.

If you use a custom image to go above the search results, your image will get called with a long referrer string of [google.com...] and also the search terms and your site name.

From [google.com...]
Drive traffic to your website the Google Free way.
The Google Toolbar blocks pop-ups, is free to download and easy to install.
Try Google AdWords and reach your best prospects across the web.
Start making money with your website. Try Google AdSense.

Hmm..

John,

Replace the code Google gave you with a bit of PHP that posts the contents of the form to the same Google address and also counts the number of searches performed.

Like Shak, I would also love to know why you want to do this, but if you really do, this is the simplest method I can think of at 1:30am ;)

You might be breaking Google's TOS by doing this....I'll leave that up to you :)

I could think of several reasons. Being a controll freak is just one of them...

But. I you know what searches your visitors perform from your site, you have a really good indication on what content to add. And it would be really easy. Just do those seaches over again, look at the results and start copying...

It's not very different from keeping track of your search engine referrals. Check them, try to figure out why people chose your site from the serps, if you aren't in top, add some content on the area...

Am I right John?

Nikke,

Interesting post, but if true a very difficult way to go around the issue.

Wordtracker does this already, why reinvent the wheel?

Yes, you can track what words you have optimized for, but not for the words you should work harder on.

If you log the search terms ppl use when leaving your site, you find out what they excepted to find but didn't.

It might not be of use for any site. If you are the manufakturer of blue widgets and have specialized in the very modern light weight kind of blue widgets, you might not really care if people leave your site searching for wooden red widgets.

But if you run an info site you might find a new area to cover. Info sites often have keywords with a shorter life span. Who wants to know everything about the widgetFF.mm virus eight months from now? But if if you find lots of you users are searching for the widgetXX.mm virus from your widgetFF.mm pages, while you didn't even know there was such a thing, you get a great lead for some new articles.

Hi

I think the URL for customisation is [google.com...]
:)
i'm going to give adding an image a go now and hopefully that will record calls to it as suggested...

Yes thats exactly right Nikke - I want to know why people wish to leave the site by searching for something else on google.

And this can be done thru Google's service...?

Never mind..! <off to get that search box I've been putting off...>
