If I am selling golf clubs, there are different types of buyers. There are the golf pros, retired men who play golf for fun, young men who've just taken up golf, businessmen who have business golf appointments, women who love golf, couples who play golf together, children learning to play golf, etc. You get the picture.
Each one of these target groups will respond to a different presentation - the businessmen will want the site to look sleek, the retired men will want it very very simple, the women will like it with pastel colors, the children will want it playful and toy-like.
So we build sites for them. Tailored for their needs.
I'm a big believer in action, taking control, not being a victim. Instead of sitting around trying to beat a dead horse, I start breeding baby horses.
Anyways..what do you do? How do you react to this type of situation?
I keep adding pages and sites always. More nets...more fish. Also, I optimize and campaign for links differently for each site as well. Who knows what's going on at Google but I figure by the end of summer this Dominic backdate will have gone away and GG is bound to reward at least some of my sites!
Moving right along with the plan, do we think we need all different photos, just file names changed, different shopping cart, different IP, different whois, etc. - or do some prefer doing it like an economy package - same photos, cart, etc. - just innovative design and unique content developed to enrich the lives of the surfers.
There's probably something to be said for both approaches.
Thank you so_much, 2_much.

Without too much effort one could still use the same cart, and a basic .dwt for static pages using CSS and different photos to drastically change the look.
I feel different branding is very valid for websites. Look at automobiles. Same important guts go into Ford, Lincoln, Mercury and now Mazda (limited cases)...but they change the window dressing and features and market the vehicles to the demographic they want to sell to.
Why should websites be any different?
If it were me, I would register domain via proxy and make sure content was unique between sites.
It naturally should be different if one is targetting different people.

Domains can easily link to each other: it's legitimate linkage.
Sometimes different IP's and WHOIS, other times the same.
It's all about being creative. Taking control. Dreaming up new schemes. Having fun while you're at it.
I know this may be a problem for people working with 1 site and trying to brand that site. A penalty there could be a problem, and in that case it may be a good idea to try and get the site re-listed.
But even if you have 1 site that you're trying to brand, why not make keyword doorway sites to promote your branding domain? That way, if that domain gets killed, it'll always have traffic coming through the satellite keyword sites.
Just a few ideas. Think about it - there are so many productive, active ways to move forward.
