I was just reading a recent Jonathan Kellerman detective
novel, The Murder Book. Imagine my surprise when on page
313 the fictional detective says:

I booted up the computer and downloaded Google,
because that search engine could locate a hamburger joint
on Pluto.

I'm betting that many novelists (Kellerman and his wife for two) are absolutey hooked on Google for researching their stories. It's only natural for Google to sneak into their writing, but what a sign of the times.

I'm also willing to bet that Kellerman has no idea about updates, penalties, et. al. and he hasn't noticed any problem with his research.

A this moment, an exact phrase search for "hamburger joint on Pluto" is a perfect GoogleWhack - one result and it's this quote, on another site. HAH! We're going to share that SERP sometime very soon. Maybe even get listed for "burgers on Pluto".

Hopefully in 10 years that Google mention won't need a footnote in explanatin of what Google actually is.

Tedster,

This is a no-brainer since we have the phrase "burgers on Pluto" in the <title> tag!

Yah, the new William Gibson book (Pattern Recognition) mentions Google on page 2 and several other times. Good book--it was a little wild to run across the mentions of Google. :)

I got curious and checked amazon.com to see what the "Pattern Recognition" book was about.

One of the reader's reviews (by Jake Mohlman) says in part: "The footage is apparently being released out of sequence, and seems to take place out of time and in some undefined location. As chatroom battles rage over whether it is a work in progress or a completed film, ..."

Echos of Dominic. <chuckle>

Mods, I think this quote is ok per fair use laws.

Yes, it was wild -- particularly since the heroine in Gibson's novel hates branding of all types and never wears clothes or carries accessories with labels on them. It's like the whole novel could have been written after Gibson read "No Logo" by Naomi Klein. And then Gibson drops the "Google" name in several places. Oh well, I guess there's nothing that says a novelist has to make sense or be consistent.

Wonder if the book character downloaded the entire Google database, or just the parts he needed. Is this a violation of Google's TOS? ;)

For the record Google can not locate a hamburger on Pluto and therefore it is broken beyond all possible comprehension......heck I don't understand why anyone would use a search engine that can't locate a burger bar on Pluto....what is wrong with these peeps?

For total proof and 100% reference I quote:
[google.com...]

LMAO...GG when will Google turn up good results for a burger on Uranus? :)

hell, 3 days later and it's not there.

Where's that fresh bot then? 3 days? That's not very fresh. Would you eat a 3 day old burger?

Tedster.. I mean the ONE result you see is there, but Freshbot hasn't yet picked up this thread. You would think it would like to eat some burgers...

Just ran across this--the search hamburger pluto returns this thread at #1 now. So now folks just have to figure out how to capitalize on the mass of people doing this search. ;)

So Googlebot likes burgers, eh?

I'll make some nice juicy cheeseburgers with bacon and leave them out on my site. And some fries and a beer.
