Lesson Learned Last Sept.

Diversify Traffic Sources

After the last Sept update, which threw many sites (including mine) Google SERPs into disarray, I have been preparing for Google to do something like this again.

I knew that yet another major algo change was inevitable. Rule #1 of the internet should be: Nothing ever lasts. Rule #2 should be: Longevity is the goal, not volatility with soaring highs and bottomless lows.

Instead of discussing whether or not this algo change is actually better or worse for Google SERPS (why care if it is?), I fall back on my lesson of diversification. Six months ago, I brainstormed and brainstormed of ways to diversify my traffic sources. I am still coming up with new ways to diversify.

Well, this algo change will take a chunk of traffic out of one of my sites, but it is not going to kill me. I am not going to be obliterated like a lot of folks. And my continuing traffic diversification efforts will help make up much of the difference.

I also lease my sites out like a piece of commercial real estate instead of relying on commission. I make less off the lease then I did the commissions but it's a safer arrangement for me IN THE LONG RUN. A loss in Google's traffic won't disrupt my lease agreement. The diversification tactics I put in place earlier will help sheild me.

Catering to Google's twice a year (or once a year) algo changes is playing another man's game. Creative diversification of traffic sources is a benefit that stems from your own intelligence and savvy.

In discussions of diversifying traffic sources months and months ago, there was a lot of whining and hem hawing of people who said they couldn't.

That's BS. Just when I think I can't figure out a way to diversify anymore, I come up with a few more.

All I am trying to say is: If you are going to try and rebuild your sites to fit Google's new algo, that's fine but I suggest spending as much if not more time trying to figure out how to diversify your traffic sources.

Good Luck

I imagine that the highs and lows of Google changes will be less significant once Yahoo switches to Inktomi. If we can just get MSN to use Fast, then the web will be a lot more stable for webmasters....

Agreed on part 1. Doubt MSN will use Fast. They just signed a 2 year deal with Ink.
