Yes I didn't see what that thread had to do with your question either. Maybe heini put the wrong one?

I too have been puzzling over the static nature of www2 and www3 as the new index was rolled out on www.

I want to really know if this update is over. I usually will check 2 and 3 and then when they match www I know what my placement is going to be......

They are matching www right now but if they are not being used in the same capacity then it doesn't matter

jjdesigns4u For my test keywords, www2 and www3 are the same as each other and have been for some time and www is different.

Google point www, www2, www3 and toolbarqueries at datacentres. While a new index is being propagated, any of these can show the old or new data.

When all of the datacentres have the 'new' index, you'll see it mentioned on WebmasterWorld, I promise. Until then, I highly recommend checking heini's link, as GoogleGuy has been much more talkative this time than in the past.

so 2 and 3 are still in the mix like the other data centers... right?

Thanks

Not quite. www-ab.google.com, www-cw.google.com, www-dc.google.com, www-ex.google.com, www-fi.google.com, www-in.google.com, www-sj.google.com, www-va.google.com and www-zu.google.com point at Google's datacentres.

When those nine return the same backlinks, that would normally be the sign that the update has finished.

It's best to think of www.google.com, www2.google.com, www3.google.com and toolbarqueries.google.com as load balancing domains that can be pointed at datacentres.

Historically, www2.google.com and www3.google.com have been pointed at datacentres with the new index some time before www.google.com starts to show it. There's no reason why any of these four domains shouldn't swap between old and new indices during the update process, hence the term 'Google dance'.

The unusual thing this time is that the link: search and Toolbar PageRank returned by the nine www- domains appear to be old. It would seem sensible to expect a second half to this update, unless Google have something else up their sleeve.
