Is a graphic between two words (like a design element, for example) read as a space or not a space?

IOW, is keyword[graphic]keyword

read as: keyword keyword or keywordkeyword

Never tried it, but logically Keyword Keyword would follow from similar examples where a piece of non-spider food was inserted between the keywords.
