I'm back... just browsing, but feel I should re-cap what many people are missing (because it is buried well back in the thread now).
There are two phenomena
a) Algo/filter changes. These are being played out on SJ, and of course: if you are testing a change you use older tried and tested data, which is what Google has done (with a dash of Fresh). Hence all the missing links, strangely dropping sites, etc.
b) The update, with the application of the latest data and links.
It was spelled out earlier that the results on SJ will change when newer data, and this months crawl data, is brought in. However, the SJ effect may replicate at other centers before that data upgrade is applied.
I think that's an accurate reflection of reality, and the message is therefore don't panic. For those who have suffered on SJ, it might get worse before it gets better, but wait until the new data is in there before you throw a wobbler.
Will the filters and back links be added shorty after the spread(of SJ) to the other datacenters(like several days) or will this info be added over a course of weeks?
I doubt even GG knows exactly how long this might take - although he did mention this could be done pretty easily.
A ball park figure would sure set a lot of people at ease.
I dunno if the mods would approve if us posters did that here, with the last one to remain conscious enough to post being declared the winner. However, I'm game for the challenge if you'll arrange #1 SERPs the next month if I pass out last. ;)
Well GG, after that post I think a lotta webmasters around here are gonna hit the bottle now after how they have reacted to these -sj SERPs to ease the pain. :( While I have only been slightly dinged by these -sj results (as opposed to being hopelessly buried in the SERPs) and thus it doesn't make much difference to me, I must say these -sj SERPs suck. Based on an example someone showed me, I am fairly certain that I have figured out the new ingredient that you have added to the secret sauce that explains these unusual results. As there are SEOs reading, I'll refrain from publicly posting about what I believe this major new algo change is. However, I'm somewhat surprised that Google would do this. If you are doing what I think you are, I thought up the same idea myself a year ago. However, this seems a radical strategy for Google to take to fight SEOs.
Are you suggesting here a change from the usual one update a month? If you roll out what is on -sj on all servers, and then add new data, then this isn't the norm for a Google dance.
I'm pretty sure it's not what you're thinking, rfgdxm1..
I'm pretty sure too.
I think no-one is in any doubt that the usual once a month thing will change at some time to keep the google index as fresh as possible. This has been talked about for months.
It's just maybe a case of sooner rather than later.
TJ
And, how pray tell do you know what I am thinking? I haven't even hinted about this in a single public post.
Added: are you referring to my post about once a month updates no longer being the norm, or my comment about a new ingredient in the special sauce?

I wonder if Google had put up a test server before in the previous months, but no one noticed it. No one noticed it here until I pointed it out. Do I get a prize for starting this whole crazy thing? ;)
It just seems backwards - why roll out an index that isn't complete and the best it can be?
There is a lot of SE chomping at googles heels waiting for a slip up. We'll see I guess
