So if you know how be vauge and ingeneral. Oppps thats what most posts are anyway. Well just a thought for you to think about.

"because I followed previous "secrets" on
webmasterworld."

I love Webmaster World but approach "secrets" discussed on the form the same way I approach my mother in law - Cautiously"

> We spent far too much time worying about hiding secrets from type 1, instead of searching out the type 3 customers.

I agree. I'll lay out the entire scoop to a client and the smart ones realize that there's a lot of work and a lot of knowledge involved and it makes more sense business-wise to contract for these services.

Then, there are the type 1 clients who proudly think they've manipulated you into revealing "secrets" in the form of free consulting, but once they realize that there's a big gap between theoretical understanding and producing meaningful results, the phone rings again.

(and there are a few who "discover" Overture and smugly think they've found the secret)

> anyone else have that problem?

oh yeah..they pay for one-word generics and think they dominate the search engines :)

The rational ones sober up eventually, and either start doing things that make sense, or get suckered into something else like IGN keywords or whatever.

The professional will speak little and read a lot. The other will go to great lengths to share their personal insight regardless of the facts or consequences of their actions. They speak a lot and listen little, not for the purpose of generating additional revenue for their business, rather to hear the sound of their own voice being sooo clever.

Well put ;)

Although there is a little truth in that... this is one place that defies this statement -- catagorically. Lurkers read alot and add nothing... and the well-informed here are all active posters.

If they weren't -- I suspect the membership would have died-out and a quality link farm would have developed in its place.

Some of these Secrets are not so easy to implement. It requires lots of hard work and sometimes a whole redesign (which is not feasible for some Big Brand websites). A case in example would be the Canonicals which is a very interesting concept. However implementing it properly requires some doing.

Would like to add one more point and that is the No. of posts is not a very comprehensive way of judging experience. We have many who contribute only to update threads.
