Does submitting to Google work?

Remind me again

Finished a site over two weeks ago and submitted it to Google. But it hasn't been spidered yet so of course it doesn't show up in Google. Looking over the past posts, some here believe the site submit doesn't work - you just have to get good link backs and wait for the next big update. Others disagreed. Was there ever a concensus as to whether or not site submit on Google works? Is my two weeks+ wait out of the ordinary? Thanks.

Googleguy recently suggested re-submitting a site this way to someone who was having a problem getting indexed, so that feature is presumably more than just a placebo. But incoming links are crucial - they'll get your site crawled deeper and more often.

Matt Cutts stated in his pubcon presentation that they DO still use it. But, if they pick it up from submit it might not stay around too long without incoming links as jomaxx says.

Should I resubmit then?

If you submitted through addurl within the last 2-3 weeks, it seems rather early to be doing a resubmit already.

The add url definitely works, but all it gets is freshbot. A page will appear for a few days then disappear. You need links to stay listed.

Sicne the dance is on, I checked to see if my site made it into any server yet. To my suprises, it didn't show up. Should I resubmit during the dance or wait a bit longer? I have at least 10 backlinks.

spikedo55,
Have you seen googlebot in your logs. If so, wait a bit longer.

Darn, I forgot to check. Well, I just did and Googlebot shows up but it only hit one page. What does that mean? I have many links pages and even a site map. Is Googlebot coming back later?

More than likely. I've had sites where the Freshbot came through but only visited a few pages. Then in a few weeks, the deepbot came along and crawled the majority of the site. Now I don't claim to know for sure but my take on it is that you've probably been cued up for a closer look later. Especially if you see other SEs in your logs. If you see evidence of the SEs then just sit tight. GB will be back.

I would suggest that you start as you mean to go on.

.:GET SOME LINKS:.

Not only when you have a new site will they help you get ranked as soon as a robot visits the site with the link but it will also improve you're link pop and with you're final rankings as well.

Submitting is really not worth the time because there are easier and faster ways to get there. Also Inktomi will pick you up quite quickly and usually around the same time as Google, (wierd that) however same again just try and get some links.

Believe me, I've been trying to beat the dance by getting as many high quality linkbacks as possible. I'm hopeing for a high pop.

Links are not everything remember that.

Just make sure the content of the site is sound, and you have optimized everything else so that you actually have something for the SE's to rank you by.
