look up 'www' and look at the category on top!

Forget the category, look at the listings.

ROTFL. Surely says something about their algo if Yahoo and Adobe can beat them at their own game :)

Would "Click Here" be the most popular phrase with 7.6 million?

"Methinks it's sex.
Porn is the single biggest money making biz on the net."

sex might be the most competitive word - but I was under the impression more money was made through online casinos and betting - surely the competitiveness of a word is not just the number of sites pitching for position but also the amount of revenue that can be generated from it?

Probably says, "FAIR" considering that Yahoo! actually has the keyword on the page in question, and google doesn't.

If I am not mistaken, and it does occur on occasion, the top money maker on the net is autions, and the top earner is not eBay, it is GE.

i tnink that . (period, or dot) is the least competitive.

google returns nothing, not even an error or response, really weird! at least * returns 'no pages were found.

For commercial keywords, the amount bid on Adwords is probably the most accurate measure of competition.

See [webmasterworld.com...] to estimate this.

There's also Googlefight.com, which was discussed here last summer, but I can't find it in a search. (Does the Site Search search Foo?)

With the update taking so long, I would have expected the keyword "googleguy" to be pretty popular too ;-)

Only 2480 results though ...

1 has 1.23 billion
2 has 801 million
3 has 741 million
4 has 618 million
5 has 567 million
6 has 455 million
7 has 404 million
8 has 329 million
9 has 349 million
10 has 524 million
11 has 380 million
12 has 402 million
13 has 271 million
14 has 274 million
15 has 309 million
16 has 243 million
17 has 193 million
18 has 250 million
19 has 221 million
20 has 310 million

So, the top 20 in order of popularity are 1,2,3,4,5,10,6,7,12,11,9,8,20,15,14,13,18,16,19,17.

It looks like prime numbers are less popular than non-primes.

Oh yes, 404 has 6.4 million matches.

(Pleeeease update the index Google, we're going stir crazy in here!)

I know it's not the best indicator but would the backward links for positions 1 & 10 of a given keyword be a better measure of competitiveness?

I'll start the ball rolling with news:
#1: 92500
#10: only 500 - surprising

I'm waiting for a lecture about pr not being the be all and end all... ; )

Or how about "link:www.yahoo.com" - it has no spaces, so is that a keyword? 223 matches. Not very competitive I know,

I think I'll go back to sleep now ;)

Doesn't it make a lot more sense to use top actual (not max) Overture bid to figure out what word/phrase is most valuable.

Otherwise, why not "the" (in quotes)? 3,450,000,000 is a lot of hits.
