How do I know when it's official

The fun part is the pre update thread, so here is my question.
How do we tell when the pre update thread has started? Its never listed on the homepage until the actual update. There are usually several going at once so how do we know which is real? Here are my theories.
The alexa ranking for ww shows a dramatic shift when the thread reaches terminal velocity around thirty posts/hr, this is usually a signal that the thread is underway. So I come to ww to see whats up and I notice several pre update threads all with numerous posts. Now how do I find the official pre update thread amongst the many impostors? Simple. Only one thread will contain GoogleGuy's pre update pep talk about lifting or doling out penalties.

I say we place some bets on this update. Lets do something a little different and guess what the number of backlinks yahoo will have.

In my short experience I've seen it go up and down, and from what I recall it went up a lot on the last update, so I think it is possible that it may go down a little bit this time around.

PR4 = Google Page Rank 4.00000 - 4.99999, give or take a link or two, so it's shown as PageRank 4 on the Google tool bar. Ditto for PR3, just change the range accordingly.

by using the backlinks feature on the Google toolbar, which
shows links to your site which are PR4 or higher.

Hmm...Google has been having updates on holidays of late. April 7 would be Janis Ian's birthday. OK, for most people they could care less, but she is my favorite musical artist. ;) Considering how late the deep crawl was, I wouldn't be surprised if the update doesn't happen until April.

Everything seemed very slow this month; the update was late, freshie wasn't very active on my site at all, Xhosa and Zulu were added... I figure they've been retooling and catching their breath. For sure, not until April.
