Will there be a March Update?

Since we just had one 2 weeks ago...

I hate to start one of these "when is the update?" threads...but I am kind of curious if we are going to get back on schedule with the update cycle. If so, we should have one soon, right? Those of you who watch for the signs, are you seeing any that the update will come on schedule?

Thanks

I've checked tea leaves, chicken bones, sent out scouting parties, and even checked answering machines - no signs to be seen yet. Kick back for another week.

Considering the deep crawl ended just a few days ago, I have to agree with Brett. I wouldn't expect the update to be any earlier than very late March.

Based on the history chart, the last 2 times the update drifted into the next month there was an update on the 25th

Being that Internet usage is three times normal due to Operation Iraqi Freedom I doubt big G will go for the update anytime soon....they usually opt for the lowest traffic days before they start off.

I doubt this is relevant. Also, if Internet usage is up because of this, I'd wonder if that translates to Google searches being up? I'd think that people wanting the latest war news would keep checking major news portals that they had bookmarked. People who want the latest news aren't searching about widgets.

Having spent several months reading the posts here at Webmasterworld, I have now got used to seeing the "when is the update" threads and really find them totally useless (with the exception of 2 comments by Brett & GG before the last Update). The Update happens when Google deside, no influence from comments posted here will make any difference. I do however have 1 question. Has anyone measured the timespane from the start of the Deep Crawl to the Update over previous months?

Yeah, and the person who announced that apparently told Spammers too, because I've gotten three times the amount of mortgage and viagra spams since the war kicked off.

This is the reason why the question is relevant to people. The deep crawl has been known to start shortly after the update. Thus, if anyone has been procrastinating doing some new content for their site, estimates as to when it will happen can let them know if they need to get the get working now. Also, while one can never know when the update will beging, it does seem possible to predict the earlist time it will happen. Google would need to complete the deep crawl before they could start calculating PR. This has to be very computationally intensive. There has always been a significant delay from the end of the deep crawl and the update. Thus, while I have no idea when Google will push the button, with the deep crawl ending just a few days ago I'd be totally shocked if the dance began tonight.

what is nice about a previous late update is that the chickens with no heads on dont start running around until about the 25th at least.

>>>Next dance: April Fools Day!

Maybe they'll play a trick on us and put all the sites in reverse order on www2 and www3 and freak us out :)

I can just picture the panic on webmasterworld... yesterday I was #2, now I'm #2,109,023! :)

Google HAS to mess with us for April Fool's day....it's in their nature. Remember Last April Fools when they finally explained the technology behind PageRank?

haha.. well I agree if their going to do an update with internet usage up..then it will come on April Fools.. I totally think it is in their nature as well. Clowns! :)

If internet usage will deter them..then damnn because I think this is going to be one hell of an ugly week overseas and I am sure alot of people will be tunning into the net as one source of info.

For April 1st, I thought about "announcing" a Google pay-for-inclusion program on WebmasterWorld as a joke. But then I reconsidered after I imagined SEOs around the world taking trips to the emergency room with complaints about chest pains.. ;)

Ok GG...I'm going to be especially cautious about anything you say on the 1st :)

Although I think you could have fun with us by having you or Brett 'supposedly leak' your identity......

Now THAT would have been funny!

I sure as hell would have a good laugh at that one. And just think how much more money the ER doctors could have earned! :)

Personally, I think more updates == better search.

Mabye someday Google can move to a continous-crawl method.

GoogleGuy,

I am new here. This is my first post. I read many of your messages and some others about hiden text.

But I do see this site has huge hiden text but ranked well with key word "<snip>"

<snip>

Could you or someone on this board shed some light on this?

I can see it now, Yahoo and OVER stock drops due to GG's April Fool's joke.....what a joke THAT would be.....

GG could be causing market fluctuations here...too funny...

Could anyone explain to me what the www2 and www3 sites do?

www2 and www3 are the update servers. When google updates, it makes changes to these before displaying the results on www.

Munster,

When the period of the update (otherwise known as "the dance") begins, the command "link:www.yahoo.com" will show a different number of results on www2 and www3 than on www. The dance usually continues over 4 or 5 days (or more?). At the end of that time, the results on www will be pretty consistently the same as the results on www3 and www3.

Hope I got that right. :) Someone else might be able to explain it more clearly.

Here's a link that might be helpful:

Thanks Beth,

So with that in mind, I have just checked that request on the www, www2 and www3. They are all the same at the moment, so I should think that the Googles Electric Boogaloo has not started yet but will happen soon?
