While checking out the Google cached version of a page of a website I'm positive was cloaking, the cached page's just blank. Nada. No hidden text even. How did they do this? I understand Google bases its rankings from these cached pages, so how can something that contains nothing gain ranking in the SERPs?

Hi Milk, and welcome to WebmasterWorld.

Are you sure you weren't redirected from the cached page? Did Google's banner still appear at the top, along with the search terms you used, etc?

Hi volatilegx, yes. I'm still on the Google cached page. Everything's there, except for the cached content. I'll PM you the link.

Thanks again for the warm welcome!

From the link you sent me, the pages appeared to be framesets.

Ooops..guess no cloaking techniques were used then? would it be safe to say rankings were gained mainly from on-page factors and PR only?

I don't know. They could have been used and I just might not have been able to tell.
