My apologies if this is in the wrong forum. I have heard that it is possible to hide metatag information (description, keywords)using Cascade Style Sheets(CSS) and was wondering whether this is at all possible.
I haven't found any information to support this except that I can use CSS to hide words on the page and can alter the layout of a page. There is nothing to say that it is possible to hide metatags at all.
I would appreciate it if someone could confirm whether this is possible or not? If so I would also appreciate a link to a resource about it.
Thanks in advance.
I'd like to help, but I'm not sure what you want to accomplish. The purpose of the description and keyword meta tags is to give information to the search engines, to try to help your rank. So what function do you have for a meta tag if the spider doesn't read it?
Or maybe your idea is to have the search engine spider see the meta tags, but not your competition? I don't think css could do that, since it addresses the screen display, and not the HTML document.
However, with meta KW tag being nearly ignored by many of the major SEs these days, I think it would be easier just to skip them altogether -- nothing to see at all because it's just not there -- no worries at all.
In the last few months I've heard several reports of great rank with no meta tags at all. It seems that, more and more, the major search engines prefer to make up their own mind about what a page's is about, anyway. Too much abuse of the tags in the past has led to them being downgraded in importance in the algo.
