I've developed a couple of websites and was looking at how to optimise the pages for search engines when I came across these to two statements from search engine world.
[searchengineworld.com...]
and
[searchengineworld.com...]
What I couldn't work out is that if a spider can have two versions a normal and a stealthed one (see stealth.htm above) what stops it working out your cloaked site is optimised and putting it to the bottom of the index as a punishment? Is it just good will that they dont or do they not have the ability or have I got it wrong completely?
I've had a look for similar questions but found no joy can any one help?

That is definitely the main risk of cloaking. Hopefully, you will have an up-to-date list of IP addresses for the search engine spiders, and the spiders will only ever see your optimized page.
