Acrobat Reader upgrade - IE still opens the older version

I've downloaded/installed latest Acrobat Reader. Firefox, as well as Windows Exoplorer, immediately started using it - however IE is still opening online .pdf with the old version.

Is there a place to manually change this pluggin for IE? Thanks.

Did you uninstall the older version?

You've got me stumped - did some searches and also poked around in IE, but can't find any relevant information. When I upgrade Acrobat Reader, I always unuinstall the previous version first, then there can't be any crossed up coding.

Try uninstalling both versions of Acrobat Reader and then re-install the newest - that should force the issue.

If you have not uninstalled the older version the Registry may be having difficulties.

Check that the ActiveX plug-in is in the correct location:
/Program Files/Adobe/Acrobat <version #>/Acrobat/ActiveX folder

Restart Windows to ensure that the latest Registry info is being used.

ReInstall Reader to ensure that the Registry is updated - can miss sometimes.

Also/Or:
I haven't upgraded Acrobat for awhile but the following may still hold for opening in an Acrobat window rather than IE - and allows me to use different Reader versions:

  1. Exit from IE.
  2. Start Acrobat Reader.
  3. Select Edit > Preferences.
  4. Select Internet.
  5. Deselect "Display PDF in Browser"
  6. Click OK.
  7. Restart IE.
  8. The next time you select a link to a PDF file, the browser should prompt you to open or save the file. If you select Open, IE should open in the whichever <version> you specify.

Thanks Tedster. I didn't uninstall prior to installing the new version. Now the old version has disappeared from the Add/Remove Programs list. Actually, I can't find it anywhere.

Also thanks iamlost. Followed the steps you suggested but IE is still using .5 instead of .6 - but I think I know why. I actually have the whole .5 suite (Reader, Photoshop, Acrobat, Distiller, Animation Shop, etc.) Although I had no problem upgrading from Photoshop .5 to .6, those reg keys are separate, whereas the reg keys are bundled for Acrobart.5, Reader.5, etc. I can't remove the key specific for Reader.5 without messing up the other apps.

Upon further consideration, I guess it's no big deal since I don't use IE much anymore and it does load .5 fine (just wanted to update to the latest.) Thanks.
