Preventing favicon requests

Hello,

I have been getting many requests for favicon.ico in my error log and would like to get rid of them. Though I have found several articles on designing favicons, I am content with the browser defaults and don't want to design an icon for every website I run. Is there an html metatag which will tell the browser there is no favicon and not to attempt the request?

Thanks.

Might be easier to just make an empty file named favicon.ico and place it there.

Hmm, I didn't realize that would work. What will a browser do if it fetches a malformed icon from the server? Will the user see an error?

Why not just make a favicon that's generic enough that it works for all your sites but is different from browser default. A big red dot or something. Just use the same one on all of your sites.

Easy way it seems to me is just put in a favicon.

it only takes 30 seconds to make a favicon, something like the already mentioned red dot. We're talking about a 16x16 pixel image here, how hard could it be?
